Although great in itself, the writing of the Sandman series would not stand alone as one of the greatest work of fiction ever. It requires the assistance of its great artists to rise to true greatness. One of the artists most influential in defining Sandman as a series is Dave McKean. In this book are presented all the covers of Sandman in a beautiful way along with some of McKean's other art. The art pieces that make up the covers are made even more stunning by the artist's (and Gaiman's) explanations about their backgrounds and the life surrounding the creation of Sandman. This book has made McKean into one of my favourite artists in one go. An amazing portfolio of dark and arresting imagery, THE SANDMAN DUST COVERS: THE COLLECTED SANDMAN COVERS presents the haunting artwork of this critically acclaimed and award-winning epic. Through these dynamic pieces, Dave McKean reflected the mesmerizing mythology, adult nature, and imaginative storytelling that made the story of Morpheus, the King of Dreams, such a groundbreaking series. Featuring an exclusive Sandman tale, this collection also includes insightful and revealing cover commentaries by Sandman author Neil Gaiman. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

This book is very useful not only as a mode of collection, but as a presentation of additional commentary by McKean and Gaiman on the creative process behind the creation of the cover imagery. I especially found their ongoing argument about fish hilarious, and the synchronicity of having them create a story and cover with fish on a leash without actual discussion was an interesting piece of trivia about the series and the creative process.
