This book was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I decided to read it because it looked interesting and I love dystopian fiction, and I certainly did NOT regret it. I finished the Maze Runner in a day and am jumping to the second book right away because this is by far the BEST thriller I've ever read!!!!! Definitely LOADS better than The Hunger Games in my opinion. Has way more action sequences, a better plot, so much intriguing mystery, way less romance (FINALLYYYY). Sure it has some bad language usage, but bravery, courage, and selflessness are portrayed beautifully in it's AWESOME characters. The action sequences are so intense, my heart was literally pounding in anticipation when reading them, and at some parts, I got so nervous that my stomach turned sour!!!!!! This book got me hooked right from the beginning, definitely recommend it to YA adult readers who are looking for an interesting dystopian read.

Thomas wakes up in a strange place with no memory of who he is, where he's from, or why he's there. As he quickly learns, there's something sinister going on and it is likely the exact reason he can't remember anything from his past. So he joins with the rest of the guys - the Gladers - in trying to find a way out of the Glade and through the maze that is serving as their prison. But it's not as easy as it sounds. And when a girl shows up not long after Thomas with a note that changes everything, the need to overcome that challenge and find a way out is more important than ever...

I did something here I don't normally like to do and saw the movie before reading the book. But it worked this time because doing so meant I actually was able to enjoy the movie and then enjoy the book because the book is SO MUCH BETTER. If I'd read the book first, I feel like I would have spent large portions of the movie rolling my eyes and going 'That's ridiculous.' The story in the book is richer and more detailed and (though this is science fiction, so it's not always a requirement) makes so much more sense. I guess that's one of the advantages to being able to tell a story with words instead of needing to have a fast-paced, visually stunning action film that is marketed to people with relatively short attention spans.

But enough on that. Dashner has created a very interesting world here and while there are some of the expected YA dystopia cliches, this one does stand out as unique to me in a number of ways. I do appreciate that there isn't a huge focus on romantic elements (at least in this book) and more on actual survival and trying to solve the problems that are in front of them. I certainly jumped on the next installment as soon as I was able to do so... ( )

Alright guys, Let's just get right down to it. This book was extremely disappointing. I've heard a lot of good things about it and know it's going to be turned into a movie so I picked up a copy from my local library. I enjoyed reading it I suppose, I never thought of abandoning it, but I was also never thinking 'oh, that was clever of the author' or anything along the lines of 'this is a fantastic book'. Actually, I spent a lot of this wondering how it was possible to turn this book into a movie. There just doesn't seem much to it. I was also having trouble with the characters. They didn't really stand out, pretty boring all together, and I had to keep reminding myself that they were NOT little kids. The main character, Thomas, was 16 and most of the kids were older... yet they acted like little immature kids. It was really annoying. The book talked about the Creators picking them for their above average intelligence, but honestly the kids weren't very bright and the writing style was about as mature as the kids. It's been said by others on Goodreads as well and I have to agree. This book is more of a 'tell' than a 'show' and it makes the kids less relatable because showing their emotions is so much more intimate than 'he was sad' 'he was scared' etc. BORING.

This book got 3 stars because I did like the plot and thought, if written differently, this book could have been amazing. Having their names come from intelligent figures from history was really cool and I liked that there was a couple good action scenes (being stuck in the maze at night) and that the boys faced the Grievers realistically aka scared to death. Lastly, I enjoyed the friendship growth between Thomas and Chuck, and the fact that the book was mostly guys and that there was no romance (though the hints did not make me look forward to book two).

Over all, it was an ok book. I just don't understand the hype. I might read book 2 if I'm bored and have nothing better to do..... ( )

“The number one Runner rule: "Never. Stop. Running”
― James Dashner, The Maze Runner

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler free way. If you feel anything in my review is a spoiler and is not already hidden in spoiler brackets please let me know. Thank you.
Thomas finds himself waking up in a box. He knows his name and can remember simple things about life but has no personal memories at all. He's the newest addition to the Gladers. One new guy a month for 2 years now. They are in a place they call the glade and surrounded by a maze. The point they say is to survive and find a way out. To avoid horrible machine beasts known as the Greavers. Then shortly after he arrived then a girl arrives. She says that everything is going to change. Then she passes out. Changes are happening for the Gladers and time is running out now. They need to find a way out.
First off. I listened to this book on Audio. So if I misspelled anything then I apologize. I liked the book ok. It had some great and complex characters, and they plot kept me guessing most of the time. But this book should have had me feeling really emotional at times and nail biting on others, but I didn't feel it. Most of the time I was just feeling like, 'huh, interesting.' The ending was good though and left me wanting to know what happens next, so I will be continuing the series.
How I choose my rating:
1* Hated it. Had to force myself to finish it.
2** Didn't really like it. Didn't hate it but not sure why I finished it other then for some closure.
3*** I liked it. I had some issues with it, but as a whole it was good. I probably won't reread again ever, but there is a chance I might finish the series. (If part of one) But if not it's not a huge loss.
4**** I really liked this book. Maybe not a work of genius, but highly entertaining. I might reread this again, and I will finish the series. (If part of one) I would recommend to those I know hold interest in this books content.
5***** I loved this book. I found little to no issues with it at all. I will definitely be rereading this and probably more than once. I will finish the series and reread it multiple times. (If part of one) I will recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!!

The story reads like a maze with erroneous turns, dead ends, and a plot that should work but falls short.

James Dashner has created a thrilling dystopian novel.
The Maze Runner has a great hook, and fans of dystopian literature, particularly older fans of Jeanne DuPrau's The City of Ember (Random, 2003), will likely enjoy this title and ask for the inevitable sequel.

With a fast-paced narrative steadily answering the myriad questions that arise and an ever-increasing air of tension, Dashner's suspenseful adventure will keep readers guessing until the very end.
