Piggie Pie is a humorous story about a hungry witch who needs piggies to complete a spell. She looks in the telephone book for a place that sells pigs and finds Old McDonalds Farm. She travels to the farm to discover there are no pigs to be found anywhere. This is because the pigs have disquised themselves as other animals to outsmart the witch. Soon a wolf comes around and tries to convince the witch that the two of them are better off leaving the farm and having lunch together. ( )

This is a good example of fantasy because witches aren't real and pigs can't disguise themselves. ( )

This is one of my all time favorite children's books. I purchased this and the sequel, Zoom Broom, many years ago - late 90's. Over the years, Piggie Pie lost a page or two, and Zoom Broom just disappeared, however, I pretty much had memorized Piggie Pie. This was also my two kids' favorite books to have read allowed, even as young adults. One day, my then 18 year old daughter, asked me to read to her. I was caught off guard - but after reading a few stories from Hans Christian Anderson, she didn't seem satisfied. Suddenly she ran upstairs to her old room, and ran back down with Piggie Pie. I was slightly bemused. She said - "...and you have to read it with the different voices!" As I was reading it, I suddenly heard my then 21 year old son running down the stairs, excited - jumped on the couch next us, and listened intently, as I read - with a smile on his face. I am ordering some used copies, because my personal library will never be complete with out them. I am also ordering the 3rd book in the series - Broom Mates - hoping it will be just as delightful. I really loved this book! The first aspect of this book I noticed what the descriptive language the author uses! The vibrant water colored illustrations are close up and full of detail which really enhance the text and bring the book to life! The illustrator exaggerates the imagery of Gritch’s long nose, chin, and green fingernails. The rhyming text is flowing and keeps readers engaged. I laughed out loud numerous times while reading this book. It's truly a funny story, and I love how the author brought in Old MacDonald, the three little pigs, and the big bad wolf! I would say the main message of this book is perseverance; the witch never truly gave up! She settled for the wolf! ( )
