Another fantastic adventure by Stapledon. Much like Star Maker, the reader is taken on the journey through one life. Sirius explores a host of interesting themes as he tries to find meaning in his unique, canine life: family, love, lust, nature, work, existentialism, friendship ( )

This 1944 sci-fi novel is about a genetically-modified humanized dog and the girl who loved him. I doubt that Lassie or Fury owes anything to it, but Dean Koontz must have known it when he wrote Watchers (there's even a small clue in a very brief mention of a failed ape experiment in Sirius).

[According to his Wikipedia article, DK has a long relationship with dogs and with a charitable organization for service dogs.]

Anyway, as mildly interesting as this book is, if you are not a connoisseur of this type of thing and want to read about a super-smart dog, I would recommend Watchers instead. ( )

A könyv főhőse Szíriusz, az emberi értelemmel rendelkező kutya. Egy brit tudós kutatásának eredménye, egyedi példány. Együtt nő fel a tudós lányával Plaxy-vel, és kutyákhoz képest hosszú életű, vagyis nem kell attól félni, hogy meghal mire a lány kamasz lesz. A könyv erősen kiszámítható, a kutya pont olyan problémákba ütközik amit olvasóként mi is kitalálunk. Nem meglepő például, hogy mennyivel jobb a kutya szaglása mint a mienk, de mennyivel rosszabb a kézügyessége. Az sem lep szerintem senkit, hogy mit szól a társadalom egy ilyen kutyához.

Egy idő után úgy tűnt, az okos kutya csak egy eszköz lesz valami társadalomkritikához. Az emberek akik nem ismerik a képességeit, szabadon beszélnek előtte, így látja, hogy mindenki milyen képmutató, de ez a szál sem vezet sehová. Mivel a könyv 1944-ben íródott, a II. Világháború is szerepet kap, de itt is csak annyit tudunk meg, hogy a háború elég értelmetlen dolog.

Meg kell még említenem, hogy a (hím) kutya és a tudós lányának kapcsolata elég fura, ezeket a részeket időnként elég kényelmetlen olvasni. ( )

The first book I read with an animal as a protagonist. I enjoyed it but without getting fond of it. ( )
