Margaret Hale, a 19-year-old girl, is returning to her family's village after living with her Aunt for nearly a decade. Her life is quickly thrown into upheaval upon her return, as her father leaves his vocation as a pastor in the Church of England, and their family is scorned for dissenting. To escape the reputation, the Hales move to Milton, a city experiencing the dramatic changes of the Industrial Revolution, and suffering from the poverty and coarse nature of a manufacturing town. Margaret begins to fall in love with the city and its hard working inhabitants. She gets to know her new neighbors well, including the strict and stern John Thornton, master of the factory. When tragedy strikes the factory, Margaret is stuck between the workers and the managers, and places herself in the line of fire for both groups in an effort to get them to reach a peaceful agreement. North and South has remained as an example of how the early days of the Industrial Revolution felt to those who lived through them, and was written from Elizabeth Gaskell's personal experience. It explores the tensions of a city becoming run by a system that values profits over people. North and South has inspired and informed other works from the time period, such as those by Charles Dickens, the editor of the original serialized version of the story.… (mere)

About as close as I've ever gotten to the joy of reading Pride and Prejudice for the first time. It's less witty than it is earnest, but it's still a book to savor. There's drama and social issues and philosophy and a slow-to-develop but sigh-inducing love story. It was just magnificent, and that final scene... I love it wholeheartedly. A keeper. ( )

Four stars for a work of fiction that is set in a world which can still resonate with the events in the world today, characters who have meaningful conversations/arguements and the lovers have a happy ending.
I might have given it five stars if the ending hadn't been so abrupt and there had been a better description of Mr. Thorton. (At least there's Richard Armitage to fanasize about!)

I read this book mainly because I found and LOVED the mini series based on it on Netflix. I have to say that this is one of those rare exceptions where I like the movie more than the book. While the book was excellent and well written, I just adored the BBC adaption. The characters are incredibly acted. ( )

I loved this book as much as Pride and Prejudice. Mrs. Gaskell is a wonderful story teller and the book has a lot of rich detail. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was for the ending. It ends rather abruptly but I guess that could be attributed to it first being published as a serial in Charles Dickens' magazine. I will read more from Mrs. Gaskell as I enjoyed this one so much.
