Nøddeknækkeren (1816)

Considering that we watched the Macauley Culkin version of the Nutcracker ballet about a million times when I was a kid, I can't beleive that I haven't read the whole story! It is so much more complex than the ballet, so I can really see why Sendak wanted to illustrate it and remake the ballet again. The story has a lot of vaguely frightening undertones - from the weirdly creepy Godfather Drosselmeier to the real life threat of a rat invasion - so Sendak's welcoming-but-odd artistic stylings fit the story perfectly. Zu "Nussknacker und Mäusekönig" brauche ich wohl nicht mehr allzu viel Schreiben - dieses klassische Märchen von E.T.A. Hoffmann ist die Vorlage für das Ballett "Der Nussknacker" mit der Musik von P. I. Tschaikowski. Wobei das Ballett nicht das vollständige Märchen umsetzt - das Märchen im Märchen (von der Verzauberung des Nussknackers) hätte das Ballett zu sehr in die Länge gezogen. So aber fehlt, laut dem Vorwort von Sedlacek, das dunkle und geheimnissvolle in der Ballettversion, die sich stärker auf eine Variante dieses Märchens von Dumas stützt. Tschaikowskis Musik ist aber so vielseitig gestaltet, dass bei modernen Aufführungen auch Aspekte des Märchens aufgenommen werden können, die im Original-Libretto fehlten.

Maurice Sedlacek (der Autor und Grafiker von "Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen") bekam Anfang der 1980er Jahre den Auftrag, ein neues Bühnenbild und neue Kostüme für das Ballett zu entwerfen, das dann im Dezember 1983 in Seattle aufgeführt wurde. Er orientierte sich dabei am Klassizismus (also Ende 18., Anfang 19. Jahrhundert). Das vorliegende Buch, mit dem Original-Märchen von Hoffmann (in deutscher Übersetzung) lebt von den Ilustrationen von Sedlacek, die teils den Bühnenbildern entsprechen, teils neu für das Buch geschaffen wurden.

Mit Bildern aus der Aufführung im Kopf (kam mal im Fernsehen und hatte mich auf diese Version aufmerksam gemacht) und Tschaikowskis Musik im Ohr lässt sich das Märchen wunderbar genießen - die großformatige Schmuckausgabe tut ihr übriges dazu. ( )

The original story is vastly different from the beloved ballet. I love the ballet. I've seen it many times, but I also really loved this story. I can almost imagine that the recent holiday film, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, had some basis in this original story. I've heard some people were in an uproar over the film because it's different from the ballet. Perhaps they have not read this original story? On my end, I'm always open to new interpretations of a story.

I highly recommend this. Wonderful story made even more enchanting by the fantastic illustrations of Maurice Sendak. ( )
