This was a disappointment, and I should have known that. This book dates from 1980, more than 40 years ago, which, when it comes to China, is an eternity: archaeological research has now yielded a boatload of new insights, making much of what is presented here really dated. However, at the time this was a prestigious exhibition: no fewer than 85 large bronze (art) objects from the earliest history of China were exhibited in the US. It was an offshoot of the American-Chinese rapprochement in 1972, a cultural equivalent of the subsequent 'ping-pong diplomacy'. However, most of the illustrations in this book, because they are in black and white, detract from that great splendor. And as mentioned, the chronological framework of this book (especially the oldest dynasties) is now thoroughly outdated. Photos of paintings, drawings, sculptures, etc. from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Rather than being organized by media, country of origin, period or school, the photos are grouped by subject matter: play, singing and dancing, animals, etc. The works are identified by: date, media, place of origin, artist and title. There is no meaningful text beyond this and an introductory page stating that people are free to appreciate art without preconditions. A delightful sampling of the museum’s collection.

Rather specialized survey of the relations between different regions in the Middle East, in the 2nd millennium BCE. Of course, Mesopotamia and the Nile Valley are the main focus, but the book also goes very deeply into the neighboring and more periphal areas. And the focus is mainly on trade, but also the exchange of art and craft, and of diplomatic relations are discussed. Extensively illustrated, as this actually is a book companying an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York, in 2008. From the mesmerizing Kneeling Warrior through The Great Wall, the Terra cotta Warriors
and horses, the [Age of Empires] expands with absolutely exquisite art as the country is united for the first time.

How fortunate were those people who witnessed this incredible exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum!

Age: intermediate
Genre: poetry

This book is filled with art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A variety of different authors came together and wrote poems based on the pieces of art featured in the book. This would be a great book to introduce poetry and art to the students. It could be used as an introduction to have the students write their own poem based on a piece of art.

Intermediate; Poetry; This book is composed of many poems, each written by a different poet about a piece of art found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They are not funny or light hearted but create an interesting perspective and discussion starter on both poetry and art. This would be a great book to discuss and read in class, and may inspire art of writing projects.

An inventive concept for an alphabet book, bringing in art from the Met collections for each letter, from Apples to Zigzags. Details from four paintings for each letter present a different view of the object; some objects are simple (cat, nose), others more abstract (game, light).½

The Museum ABC by the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a non-fiction informational book. For each letter of the alphabet, there are four paintings for young readers to find the item that starts with that letter. All the paintings are pictures that are on exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book would be good for nursery school children and kindergartners who are learning the alphabet. It is also a good way for young children to start learning art appreciation.

Especially good for theatrical design research. Some color, but mostly black and white. Work from the 14th C to the middle 20th C.½

This silent film from the 1920s shows the Metropolitan Museum of Art's excavations at Deir el Bahri of the Mortuary temple of Hatshepsut. The footage shows a huge work-force of some 700 workers clearing the sand and earth. Also shown is a tomb and it's packed contents of wooden coffins and their removal. Additionally, we see how the wooden coffins were stabilized with wax and their eventual packing up and shipment to the museum. This film presents a wonderful glimpse into archaeology on the "grand scale" and how the excavations were conducted during the late 19th and early 20th century.
