I thought this packed a lot of information into its word count, and the tone was just right for an early elementary audience.

I thought that the book was depicted very well, and this could help be a good tool to teach students the water cycle. The book is full of brilliant pictures with great explanation of the water cycle. The book even includes more stages like condensation, dew, frost, and more.

This book has many facts and explanations of the water cycle in simple terms. By using everyday life examples, the author shows how we use water and how water is transformed and eventually reused. Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, frost, dew, and water vapor are all explained but the book also discusses how some water is too unhealthy to drink or reuse. It also gives fun facts in smaller print about how much water is on the Earth and how much water is in human bodies. These fun facts are optional to read, but fun to know. I could use this book to teach younger students about the water cycle or just to talk about water in general and how important it is for life. I thought it was cool how in the back of the book, there are experiments to do with water, fast facts, and a glossary.

This book is about light! It talks about what light is, and different illusions lights can create. It talks about what shadows are, how mirrors work and what a rainbow is. I enjoyed reading this book because I learned some things myself. I didn't know mirrors worked because the light from us is reflecting off of the mirror. I also liked how in the back of the book it shows little experiments that children can do with light. I might use this book in a class to teach a lesson on rainbows and use a modified version of the make your own rainbow experiment to do with the kids!

This book describes many different types of sound such as echos, drums, and describes the scientific content behind them. It also has fun facts that are enjoyable that can connect to students' everyday lives. It also aids interactive read-aloud by asking questions at the end of the book. It also has ideas for some sound experiments and additional facts at the end of the book that could be used for a unit on sound. I would use this as an introduction to a unit on sound and build an anchor chart with the ideas students hear in the book and that we can come back to throughout the unit.

I thought this book was a great introduction for the water cycle. I enjoyed the visuals as well as the text is was an easy read but gave you actual scientific facts. I also appreciated how in the back of the book it gave a glossary for words that the student may have not known or are just being introduced to. They had words like condense, dew, evaporate, frost, and vapor. I found it really helpful for the students to refer back and review these words that they were unsure of.

This book helps kids learn about rocks. Through rocks, kids learn about making groups, how to count, science facts, etc. This helps their personality development because it can help them learn to weigh evidence and make choices by grouping features of different rocks

I guess when I think of science topics my mind doesn't go straight to dirt… but it should because soil is important! In this book we are introduced to the components of dirt, how it's made, and how to maintain healthy soil for our environment. I didn't realize the different kinds of dirt there are in the world, I learned so much in this book. The book even includes hands-on experiments, and I love when books do that.½

This mentor text provides facts about Halloween by answering prompted questions around the history, symbols, and traditional observation of the holiday in the US and around the world. With pictures on every other page, this book also gives extra facts and resources at the end for students to further research.

Rocks: Hard, Soft, Smooth, and Rough by Natalie M. Rosinsky comprehensively focuses on rocks. The book is easy to navigate because of its many helpful features including page numbers, a table of contents, a glossary, a rock chart, an index, and a further reading page that features books and websites. There is also a fun fact on each page to engage the students in the topic. On most of the pages, there are repetitive phrases like, “You might see,” or “If you see,” to help students make connections from the text to their personal experiences. Many of the pictures are labeled to help with identification. For example, the obsidian and granite are labeled to help differentiating different types of rocks. Rosinksy uses exciting and descriptive language when writing about rocks. She says that rocks, “tell tales of creatures that swam, slithered, or crept” (p. 16). Typically nonfiction is not considered exciting, and this type of language really helps it come alive. It is important to learn about what is all around us because it plays such an important role in shaping out world.

I like this book for three reasons. First, I like how the text is engaging. The author employs fun facts on every page, providing interesting information on rocks. For instance, the author wrote, “Some rocks are four billion years old. (That’s 4,000,000,000 years!) Think of all the stories rocks can tell.” This fun fact provides engaging information that draws attention to the book and the subject matter.
Second, I like how the book employs a rock chart in order to present the information in an easy and reader-friendly manner. The chart presents facts on obsidian, granite, sandstone, limestone, and marble rocks. It lists the kind of rock that each one is, the color the rock consists of, what it feels like, and the uses for the rock. The chart is also colorful, which draws attention to it. The author’s employment of the chart provides key information on the types of rocks in a different form than text, which can lead to a greater understanding of the facts.
Third, I like how the author went beyond descriptive text to mention activities that involve rocks. For instance, one activity is on how to make a rock collection. Then, another activity consists of how to make a sandstone brick. Both of these activities provide more information to further understand rocks. In addition, the author provides a list of resources at the library and on the web for finding more information on rocks.
Throughout this book, the author demonstrates the big idea of the book as one that provides the reader with information on rocks as well as provides the reader with ways to continue his or her understanding through activities and additional resources. This book is filled with facts that are both engaging and informative as well as are presented in a reader-friendly manner. In this way, the author shows the importance of rocks and the need to understand them.

This was a good read. While I'm not crazy about the topic, the book was enjoyable and informational. The way the book is written is organized in a very clear and understandable manner. For example, the three types of rocks (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary) are separated into their own sections. There are several useful text features, like headlines, pictures with captions, and a glossary to define unfamiliar terms. I also like the illustrations in the book. The pictures are visually appealing, while also supporting the text. For example, there is a neat picture of an active volcano. Not only did this picture catch my eye, but it also tied the text together. The big idea of this informational text is that there are different categories of rocks, each with their own unique properties.

I really liked this book based on the factual information and the child friendly illustrations. One part I really liked was when they talked about volcanoes and the different rocks found in them. It even showed what the inside of an erupting volcano looked like. Another part I liked was when it talked about fossils but used more kid friendly vocabulary like bone fragments. This book pushed students to really think about nature and the earth we live on. It even had tables with information in them and random fun facts that would keep them interested.½

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked this book. First, I liked that many of the pages included fun facts. For example, the page that explain light offers the fun fact, "Light comes from the sun. Other natural light is made by lightning, fireflies, and the northern lights that shine in the Arctic." I liked the fun facts because they kept me interested and wanted to to learn more about the topic. I also liked how the author added one "not-so-fun-fact". For example, when talking about infrared and ultraviolet light from rainbows, the not-so-fun-fact was that, "Ultraviolet light from the sun can burn your skin." This was interesting because the author was providing the reader a negative piece of information, which is obvious through the footnote. Second, I liked the "Out-of-sight Experiments" that are integrated at the end of the book. I liked the experiments because it supplies readers with instructions for creating their own science experiments that relate to the topics in the book. The main idea of this book is to inform young readers of light, shadows, mirrors, and rainbows in a light and enjoyable fashion.
