Fancy Nancy learns about Earth Day at school, but gets serious about enforcing the rules at home, which has some negative consequences (a fancy word for something bad). With the help of her parents she is able to find more balanced ways to advocate for the earth.

Summary: Fancy Nancy is a little girl who learns about the importance of helping our Earth. She takes every step to go green and takes it to the extreme. When she deletes her mom's essay and makes her sister upset, she has to learn that she can't be bossy and she has to be considerate of others.
Genre: This is realistic fiction because all the events that happen in the story can actually take place and occur in real life. The characters and events are not based on a specific event, but could happen.
Medium: Ink and color
Age Appropriateness: K-3
Use in a classroom: This is an early chapter book that could be used to strengthen the reader's ability to read on their own or out loud. This book could be a read out loud for the whole class to discuss earth day and how they could participate in helping the Earth. You could also discuss the verbs/adjectives Fancy Nancy learns in the book (adore, discuss, flexible, irritated, tote).

Ok, this is better. We like Fancy Nancy (I've already purchased this book for my library, btw). Although I would like to see more "real" picturebooks from O'Connor and a little easing up on the franchise stuff that's rolling out, we are happy with whatever we get. Fancy Nancy is all set to celebrate earth day and has lots of practical suggestions for being "greener". But when she gets carried away, her parents have to remind her that she needs to care about people as well as the earth. I like Fancy Nancy's balance of the the fancyness that many little girls love with the demands of everyday life
