P'raps not my very favorite Baylor/ Parnall collaboration, but still magical. The first half is more about finding the fossils nowadays, the second is more about the world from which they came. Good science, gorgeously told. ( )

Genre: I would categorize this as poetry also, because it takes on the form of poems in two voices often throughout the book, with the two columns of different lines. The theme is fossils in different parts of the world, different bones, and different facts and opinions about how the Earth was formed to have so many different bones and fossils. It doesn't necessarily rhyme, but it is not a literal one plot story and each page has a different kind of poem on it.

The media used in this book looks to me like a strong type of paint, like acrylic, gouache, or even some strong watercolor pencils because the colors are very intense and vibrant. The details are sharp enough to say that an ink pen or detail pencils were used, but there are many colors as well that do not go outside the lines. ( )

Great for grades 5-8. Illustrations drawn with water colors. Great for teaching kids science. A fossil hunter looking for signs of an ancient sea in the rocks of a western Texas mountain describes how the area must have looked millions of years ago.
