Racing Against the Odds is a biography about Wendell Scott. Scott’s dream was to become a race car driver and in his time there were not any African American drivers, hence the name “Racing Against the Odds.” Through the story and the illustrations of this book we learn about the life of Wendell Scott, the good and the bad. This book makes it easier for children to understand how times were with race and equality. ( )

This is a very exciting book and although a biography, it puts a good bit of fun on the story line. The illustrations assist with this by being so colorful and detailed. Being a story of an African American having a passion for something in this time period, this book explains his life perfectly. Wendall Scott has a desire to race and does everything he can to do so. Any child with an interest in racing or has a passion for something in general would really enjoy this book. ( )

This is another example of this author's talent with biographical writing. I was really impressed and the illustrations by the equally talented Eric Velasquez were expressive and varied. Overall, this book is a winner. Everyone should make an effort to add this to their biography collection. A little known hero in the world of racing has been brought into the spotlight, and everyone should take notice. ( )

This book is pretty square on the facts of Wendall Scott's life, how he wanted to race, did so against the odds of being an African American in the South and having to run a shoestring operation. The illustrations, however, leave much to be desired. The individuals portrayed aren't very in keeping with how they really looked. Wendall's pictures are reasonably close, but Buck Baker doesn't look anything like Buck Baker. That said, it is worth getting for the information for a child who is a fan of NASCAR and needs some history.
