This classic biography was first published forty-five years ago and has since established itself as the standard account of Saint Augustine's life and teaching. The remarkable discovery of a considerable number of letters and sermons by Augustine cast fresh light on the first and last decades of his experience as a bishop. These circumstantial texts have led Peter Brown to reconsider some of his judgments on Augustine, both as the author of the Confessions and as the elderly bishop preaching and writing in the last years of Roman rule in north Africa. Brown's reflections on the significance of these exciting new documents are contained in two chapters of a substantial Epilogue to his biography (the text of which is unaltered). He also reviews the changes in scholarship about Augustine since the 1960s. A personal as well as a scholarly fascination infuse the book-length epilogue and notes that Brown has added to his acclaimed portrait of the bishop of Hippo.… (mere)

A thorough and informative biography of one of the great writers and thinkers of ancient Rome. This is the definitive source for his life and thought. I found it was helpful when read along with The Confessions and City of God. ( )

This is perhaps the most comprehensive biography available of a classical figure. That I found portions of it tedious says more about me than it does the book. ( )

I am neither a Christian nor a religious person of any stripe, and I could NOT put this book down. Intellectual biography of the highest caliber.

The Epilogue adds precious new insights, and Peter Brown's humble reflections upon his 1960s original (printed here unchanged). ( )

A long and detailed look at the life of Augustine written in the 1960's. One of the more interesting parts of the edition I read was the epilogue that discussed works of Augustine that have been discovered and catalogued since the original edition of the book was published. Some of these works altered the way the author thought about Augustine, giving us a better view of his real character as a preacher and pastor.

My favorite quote from the book is actually from Augustine's Exposition on the Psalms, "The clouds roll with thunder, that the House of the Lord shall be built throughout the earth; and these frogs sit in their marsh and croak - 'we are the only Christians.' ( )
