Fiction. Science Fiction. HTML:

The Daleks are advancing, their empire constantly expanding. The battles rage on across countless solar systems - and the Doctor finds himself stranded on board a starship near the frontline with a group of ruthless bounty hunters. Earth Command will pay these hunters for every Dalek they kill, every eyestalk they bring back as proof.

With the Doctor's help, the bounty hunters achieve the ultimate prize: a Dalek prisoner - intact, powerless, and ready for interrogation. But with the Daleks, nothing is what it seems, and no one is safe. Before long the tables will be turned, and how will the Doctor survive when he becomes a prisoner of the Daleks?

An adventure featuring the Tenth Doctor, as played by David Tennant

Really enjoyed this book. Trevor Baxendale did a fantastic job with his portrayal of David Tennants 10th Doctor.

You gotta love a story where the doctor is up against his old enemy the Daleks. In this story the Doctor meets some humans and a female of an unknown species on an abandoned planet after they save him from being trapped in a locked chamber on Hurala. They are then taken to Planet of Ghosts ( )

The Doctor joins a team of bounty hunters to save the world from the Daleks. The story in this installment is great and the Tenth Doctor is perfectly charactertized. The audiobook is narrated well too, but the voice of the Daleks gets a little tiresome to listen too, especially since they have so many lines - this one should probably be read in paper format. ( )

As Doctor Who baddies go, Daleks are fairly reliable ones to use in a story: they are instantly recognizable, single-minded in their quest for dominance of the universe, and they talk in ALL CAPS, which makes many of their statements funny. In this book, the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) is stuck on the planet Hurala, a former refuelling station, when he encounters a group of bounty hunters from Earth who are hunting Daleks. The group gets more than they bargained for, though…

This was a pretty good story. It took a few chapters to get settled in, but the second half of the book especially was very thrilling indeed. Overall, the characterization of Ten fit with his television self, and the dialogue was fairly snappy. I did object to the fact that only one female character was really useful (or given opportunities to be useful), and I don't think the word "realized" is a suitable replacement for "said".

In sum I would say if the plot summary interests you and you like the Tenth Doctor, go ahead and read it. ( )

*Spoiler alert - if you've not read this book and you want to, there are some spoilers in the following review.*

This is one of the last Doctor Who novels featuring the Tenth Doctor. I think this one is set not long after the episode Journey's End, so he's on his own. He soon meets up with a group of humans, who turn out to be Dalek hunters of all things and so the adventure begins. Trevor Baxendale is getting to be quite a name for Doctor Who books, although this is the first of his works that I've read. It certainly is one of the better written novels, nicely pacey and definitely engrossing.

The Doctor's personality is very well captured and I really felt for him in places. The secondary characters are also quite nicely rounded and the Doctor's interaction with them seemed accurate. The Daleks were also portrayed as being cruel, ruthless and intelligent, just as they should be; the only problem is that it's hard to be terrified of 'exterminate' as a written word, no matter what fancy font it's printed in. A lot of the scary aspect has to come from prior experience of the Daleks because the book just can't convey that menace adequately enough.

I found the plot to be better in the second half of the book, once the prison aspect of the title kicks in. It's certainly a lot darker than most of the previous books, I'm not sure if that's due to the plot, the author or just the fact that this is Ten on his way out. There are some scenes that are extremely brutal and quite horrific, both on the side of the Daleks blowing up an entire planet and killing everyone on it, and the humans torturing the Dalek that they manage to capture. Although Doctor Who is definitely a children's show, it is nice to get something that is more adult in nature.

All in all, this is definitely one of the best Doctor Who novels and certainly one to be recommended. ( )

This is the most enjoyable Dr Who book I've read so far. The character of Tennant's Doctor is well done, and there are some typical lines from him - you can imagine him saying it, which for a Tennant fan is always a bonus! ;-)

The storyline is a good one, fast paced, and featuring some scary daleks. It had enough to keep me happily reading, but would also be suitable for younger readers.
