This book is primarily a journal of the author’s visits to Amherst, part of her life-long study of Emily Dickinson and her poetry. It could serve as an introduction to Dickinson, but is perhaps approached best with some prior familiarity with the poet’s life and work. Professor Takeda writes a very personal memoir. As somebody who lived several years as a foreigner in Japanese society, I particularly enjoyed her insightful discussion of American society, both current and 19th-Century, from her cultural viewpoint.
