Even laying aside some terrifically lazy writing, most of Bengal's Heart read as if Ms Leigh was making it up as she went along. The characters hardly seemed to know whether they were coming or going---drawing conclusions without even a bit of evidence or, alternately, expressing confusion about assertions they'd made not twenty pages before---and the plot was all over the place, milling over the same conversations and actions until the last fifty pages or so.

I would've put the book down within the first few chapters, but since I'd been looking forward to reading the next volume in the series---Jonas' story!---I didn't want to miss any important developments. I suppose a few of the plot points might be picked up in later books, but I'm not sure they were worth the struggle of reading this one. Especially since the revelation of Jonas' mate was a huge disappointment. ( )

This book was my introduction to Lora Leigh's breed novels. While I found the constant sex scenes to be a bit repetitious, Leigh's characterization of Cabal, a Bengal Breed, was fascinating and captivating. On the other hand, Cabal's mate, Cassa, the hard nosed female reporter, seemed a bit too cliched for my taste.

The story kept my interest by delving into the series story line and it's over arching plot while maintaining a good focus the immediate story between Cabal and Cassa. Leigh uses the science fiction elements to very good effect, neither overwhelming the story nor burying it. She infused the story with enough to make it interesting.

Two things that stood out: Leigh's overuse of a small number of catch phrases ("He bit out the words" or "he was good, damned good") caused me to wince a number of times. I found these types of phrases distracting. A nit for sure, and something most readers may over look.

The second was the repetitiousness of the sex scenes. At times I wasn't sure if this book could be classified as hard erotica or romance. While I appreciated Leigh's attempt to create a primitive, feral relationship between Cassa and Cabal, I believed she missed the mark. A lot of readers will skim over these sections meaning that a quarter of the book does not advance the story. The erotica could have been cut in half and the story would have survived just fine. ( )

lots of information, subplots while keeping main storyline with Cabal & Cassa good to read, as always takes them too long to get there head straight

I enjoy the drama of these books so much. Cabal's mate is up to her eyeballs in the current drama the Breeds are trying to contain. Another Breed keeping secrets from his mate though, and I don't know why but it annoys me so much. It was action packed, I liked seeing some of the other Breeds we've come to meet like Dog and Brim, and I was intrigued by the introduction to the primal phenomenon. ( )

Great continuation with the story line. Cool that Cabal's tiger aspect shows up with stripes on his face too. Would like to get to Jonas story though. ( )

“I'm calling in a favor," she stated.

Silence filled the line. She could almost feel the intractable Breed mulling over possibilities and wondering which favor she would call.

"You have a surplus," he finally sighed. "Will it get me killed?"

She almost grinned at that. She couldn't imagine Mordecai contemplating death, let alone worrying if it would affect him.

"I guess anything is possible," she mused. "You backing out?"

He grunted at that. "Life's too long sometimes anyway.” — 0 likes
“For God's sake, if you mated bastards don't stop going apeshit like this, then I'm going to start shooting you."

"Remind me not to tell Jonas if I get infected," Lawe murmured to Rule.

"Better yet, don't get infected," Rule grunted. "I'd hate to have to shoot you myself when you start acting stupid.”
