Not the best in the BD series; weak plot.
--------------------------------------------------------------
(May 2022) nearing end of a re-read. My original comments (above) still stand except my accusation of a weak plot is inaccurate. The plot in my opinion is convoluted and over-complicated. Admittedly I am a simple individual and perhaps this is why I soon lost track of all the twists and turns and the relationship of the various characters was bewildering. I suspect that if this were to be the first BD novel for a new reader, it would be tempting to abandon any further attempts which would be a shame as there is still the excellent crafted "Temple Tower". It may be that Sapper was struggling to find new variations on the same theme - Drummond drawn into a dangerous situation, calls in his regular friends (Algy and Peter) and they all find themselves faced with a seemingly unavoidable deadly fate in a locked room/dungeon. Perhaps at this stage Sapper's own health was failing.
The "blurb" on an earlier novel suggests that there is something about Drummond that disarms criticism and it is good to make his acquaintance again. I agree with this sentiment but not for "Bulldog Drummond at Bay". I still like BD and will continue to reread and enjoy his earlier appearances.
