Technological advancement and national security efforts have stimulated debate on civil liberties. The authors in this anthology examine whether the basic rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution--such as the freedoms of speech, press, and religion and the rights to due process, privacy, and equal protection under the law--are threatened and, if so, how the government and the courts should respond. The language is geared towards college level/academic readers. The language is very sophisticated and an advanced vocabulary is required to fully understand the arguments. This book is not recommended for high school. If anything, some occasional articles may be used in the classroom, but some guidance will be required.
The tone in each article is very academic, serious, and authoritarian. They back up that tone with highbrow vocabulary and an extensive works cited. Depending on the reader, the language could be off-putting. In my opinion, some articles use unnecessary vocabulary to sound more sophisticated.
