MONSTER weaves the riveting story of brilliant Dr. Kenzo Tenma, a famous surgeon with a promising career at a leading hospital. Tenma risks his reputation and promising career to save the life of a critically wounded young boy. Unbeknownst to him, this child is destined for a terrible fate. Conspiracies, serial murders, and a scathing depiction of the underbelly of hospital politics are all masterfully woven together in this compelling manga thriller. In the little mountain town of Ruhenheim, life is simple and peaceful. Neighbors greet each other on the street, and the biggest case the local authorities have to worry about is a lost dog. But this bucolic splendor is about to change. Will Tenma, Grimmer and Inspector Lunge be able to prevent the massacre Johan is planning for this sleepy village and its unknowing inhabitants? Or will the cobbled streets of Ruhenheim soon run red with innocent blood? The final stage is set, and now every surviving MC converges onto the scene. Shall we all have a lottery? Let's see who in this little sleepy town survives. Kinda small for an armageddon, but the stakes are very personal and very intense.

What do I really think about PK's return to a normal human being instead of a children's book author? Melodramatic, but not entirely unbelievable. Considering how much time people have obsessed over one thing or another in this whole story, I don't find it too off the mark to grant him a little humanity in the end.

What really fascinates me is Mr. Monster, himself. He still continues to be deep and his motives are strange and opaque, even if we're given an actual reason. The reason is almost literary and a high idealism, if demons were subject to high idealisms. Hell, maybe all demons are personified idealisms, anyway. How would I really know?

Neat, I actually managed to correctly guess this volume's twist in advance. I still have no idea why Johan dressed as Nina. Maybe because he thought she was more important than himself? Anyway, even if Nina was the one at the mansion, it was still Johan at 511 Kinderheim, right? So they both had horrific childhoods, but Johan was the only one who took all that and turned it into years of murders. I still feel kind of sorry for him, though. Had their circumstances been different, would he have turned out differently?

I'm happy to see more of Lunge and Grimmer. The massacre at Ruhenheim happens fast – this town must have been a powder keg from the start, for Johan's people to stir them up so quickly.

A warning (although, if you made it this far, you're probably going to be reading this volume anyway): this volume contains the killing of a dog, a cat, and several kids. I don't recall any of it being on-page, although several of the bodies are shown.
