In our internet age, I have a simple test for reference books. Does it give me any value-added over the resources on the internet? In the case of this 1990 book, the answer is no. About 100 pages of the 240-page book is an A to Z guide to herbs "inspired by the herbals of John Gerard and Nicholas Culpepper, which were published in over 300 years ago." Each herb features attractive color plates of the plant, stem, leaf, seed, flower with its various uses. But if I look at the page on Basil and its counterpart of the Wiki and other online guides such as Growing Basil, the book loses. Next section of nearly 40 pages is "Cooking with Herbs" and only a few of the recipes ("Persian Chicken with Herbs," "Rosemary cheese fingers") seemed enticing. And after all, what kind of book on cooking with herbs doesn't include a recipe for Pesto or Tabbouleh? I might have been more excited by the chapter "Herbs in the Home" if I were more crafty and excited about making nosegays, potpouri, pomanders and wreaths. I am curious about growing some herbs at home--particularly Parsley, Basil. Again, not seeing that this is beating what I can find online. *Puts in the books to try to sell or give away box* ( ) This is a wonderful picture book that provides fun topics and facts that children can discuss and research. Children will love reading this book and learning new and fun information. Using this during science time would be helpful, just make sure that the children do not get bored or overwhelmed by all the facts. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
Published in association with the Smithsonian Institution, this accessible, attractive, and detailed handbook combines 1,500 vivid full-color photos with descriptions of more than 700 species. This authoritative, systematic and clear photographic approach marks a new generation of identification guides. This comprehensive book explains what an herb is, identifies which parts are collected and prepared, and describes different uses for each--from cooking and medicine to beauty treatment, aromatherapy, and crafts. Essential details of the species' size, habitat, and natural range complete every entry, and a concise glossary explains technical and scientific terms. Each expertly written entry combines a concise description with annotated photographs to highlight the herb's distinguishing features and chief uses. Color illustrations show the whole plant or tree in its most typical form, while color-coded bands provide quick reference facts. The guidebook is authored by Lesley Bremness, writer and presenter of the TV show The World of Herbs, who has studied exotic herbs from all around the world. She is also a gifted organic gardener, having first been "discovered" when she won an herb garden design competition at the Chelsea Flower Show, London. No library descriptions found. |
