Fiction. Western. Thriller. Historical Fiction. HTML:As far as the eye can see is a vast, empty horizon. Evie Teale has finally accepted that her husband wonâ??t be coming home. To make ends meet she runs a temporary stage station. Conagher is a very good western novel. The storyline is consistent. There are good guys and bad guys. The writer depicts western life as difficult, dangerous and not for the faint hearted. The storyline is solid, the characters are all solid and the five star rating here is solid. Highly recommended. ( )

One of the great pieces of literature, at the same time embodying and transcending the Western novel. And certainly at the top of L'amour's output.

It is an exciting book, to be sure, but also a brilliant and touching study of love, compassion and justice. In its skillful simplicity, it touches the heart and reminds us of an often unmentioned, but very real danger of the old West: loneliness. The characters all battle this unseen enemy, each in his own way - whether literally throwing dreams into the wind, or sacrificing everything out of loyalty to the brand.

Definitely, read it. Even if you think you don't like the Western genre, this one just might make you a believer. ( )

I saw the movie before I read the book, so I think it helped imagining Sam Elliott as Conagher. I'm not an expert on the westerns, but this was a pretty decent little story featuring a strong capable man and a woman who was his perfect match. ( )

This has to be my favorite of all the Louis L'Amour books, and I've read just about every one. The characters are appealing and the story is not the usual 'cowboy' type of book you might expect. The movie was pretty good, too, if you can overlook a few changes (of course), and it didn't hurt that it starred my favorite cowboy, Sam Elliott! I highly recommend the book, and to a lesser extent, the movie. ( )
