Unterhaltsamer als viele Romane. Dieser Reisebericht gibt einen guten Einblick in die Seele Kubas, die von Widersprüchen gezeichnet ist. ( )

The writing is a little overly discriptive for my usual taste but I really connected with this book because it's the first I've read that really took me back to Cuba. It's really like that. The trials and tribulations surrounding the food in the book I particulary enjoyed in a morbid kind of way. I would have given this book a higher rating but I was a little put off by the authors liberal accounts of his encounters with the local women. Nothing graphic or detailed by any means but he sure does come off as a bit of a man whore and I wonder why anyone would choose to represent themselves like that. Though I'm pretty sure pheremones are what keep that country alive so perhaps this is just a tool to further describe the country to his readers. I love the history, I love the way he cuts through the red tape with nothing but gille and attiude and I love that he really seems to love Cuba and to get that you can't 'get' Cuba. It's a confusing and confounding and amazing, awe inspiring and heart breaking place and Christopher Baker captures that perfectly. ( )
