Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the latest in a long tradition of young women who've been trained to give their lives in the war against vampires. We've gotten glimpses of these other women over the years on T.V., in comics, and in books. Now for the first time, the writers from the television series, including the show's creator, Joss Whedon, and one of its stars, Amber "Tara" Benson, present the tales of these girls, with the help of comics' greatest artists. Gene Colan, co-creator of Marvel's Blade and Tomb of Dracula, returns to Dark Horse for the story of a young girl in 1970s New York, battling vampires. Tim Sale, artist of recent epics Batman: The Long Halloween and Superman for All Seasons teams with Joss Whedon for a grim tale of a medieval slayer. American comics legend P. Craig Russell (Dr. Strange, The Ring of the Nibelung) and international rising star Mira Friedmann (Actus Tragicus) also join the stellar lineup.… (mere)

Picked up this graphic novel from the library to read in the laundromat while things were spinning. It's exactly what it sounds like. There were a few different drawing styles and the stories were short and sharp. I try and keep my slayer obsession under wraps, but sometimes she peeks out. Bwah! (May 03, 2004)

It was nice to read about the different slayers, but there really wasn't a 'plot' so much as a bunch of scenes of different people/places ( )

I LOVE collections, and I love to see different authors' and artists' takes on the Buffyverse. This was excellent.

Tales of the Slayers (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) introduces the different Slayers over time. It begins with ‘Prologue’, which is set in ancient Africa and reveals the first Slayer. But my favourites have to be Righteous and Presumption. Righteous is set in a medieval town and Presumption begins in a Jane Austen-ish way, at a lovely ball, and has a wonderful twist that made me immediately reread it, and marvel at the storyline.

Joss Whedon (the creator of ‘Buffy’) wrote three out of eight of the stories, including Righteous, and the rest were written by those involved with the TV show. The amazing illustrations are by a wonderful mix of artists, (who are described as “comics’ greatest artists” – unfortunately, I am quite ignorant about things like that and have never heard of any of them, but now that I have, I’ll definitely look out for these artists!), including Gene Colan, Tim Sale and P. Craig Russell, who all bring their very unique styles to the Slayer universe. Gorgeous! ( )

This is a great selection of tales from the Buffyverse. We get some real insight into what the life of the Slayer was through various generations. The tales are all great, but definite stand-outs include Jane Espenson's "Perception" and Amber Benson's "The Innocent." The collection opens with a story from the first Slayer and ends with Fray, the future Slayer.

Anyone interested in the history of the Slayer, or just good vampire tales in the Joss Whedon style, this is definitely one for you. ( )

Overall, a very nice anthology collection that rounds out the history of the Buffy world.
