Manuel Castells est directeur du Centre d'études européennes à l'Université de Californie à Berkeley. Il y a maintenant une douzaine d'années qu'il a entrepris une réflexion sur les implications des nouvelles technologies sur notre société.
Cet ouvrage inscrit cette réflexion dans ses dimensions historiques, politiques et bien évidemment sociales pour aboutir au postulat de la primauté de l'idée de réseau.
Sous le coup de ce paradigme d'abord technologique, notre univers remplace progressivement la verticalité de ses hiérarchies à l'horizontalité de la communication. L'auteur marque son propos en employant le terme de "révolution informationnelle", comme on a pu parler de "révolution industrielle". Il plonge dans les racines historiques pour montrer combien les Etats ont joué - et jouent encore - un rôle capital en faveur ou défaveur de la grandeur des civilisations. Le paradigme du réseau est qualifié par l'auteur de révolution en ce qu'il symbolise la rencontre entre une technologie, ,les réseaux informatiques, et un mode de développement économique, le capitalisme. Révolution dont il étudie les conséquences sur la communication, l'urbanisme, l'économie et le travail. Ce dernier va évoluer fortement du fait de la souplesse et de la mobilité propres aux réseaux. Mais l'auteur n'en tire pas l'idée d'une évolution globale unique : les cultures nationales vont adapter le modèle, profitant de sa structure à géométrie variable. Un ouvrage qui met en avant l'analyse au détriment de tout jugement : Castells dit des changements de la société en réseau qu'ils ne sont "ni bons ni mauvais, pas plus qu'ils ne sont neutres".

if you are going to a desert island and have to take only five books with you, please take this one. it is 10 years old, but it is an amazing summary and not yet out of date -- some of the stuff he wrote about time and flows, people have mostly not even thought about yet. ( )
