Set in 1005 AD, twins Brus and Jan go a-Viking with their father Harald Redbeard and all their household. They plan to settle in England with Danish relatives there. But, their ships are caught in a fierce gale on the North Sea, and they are taken far off course to the western shore of Scotland. Held captive by a cunning Scottish Laird, Jan and Brus must navigate the political intrigue of chieftain, clan, and king without the help of their father, who has been killed and their mother, who is believed lost at sea. A well-written and believable tale of two Norse youths who wind up captives of an evil Scot lord. The author paints an interesting picture of life just prior to William's conquest of Britain, probably about 1020. While there are scenes of fighting and people dying there is nothing graphic. ( )

Tells the tale of two Viking boys whose mother was lost at sea and father murdered as they attempted to settle in Scotland. In the process of avenging their father and locating their mother, the boys convert to a monotheistic faith identified with their new country. The religious content plays a moderate role in the resolution of the story. Well done, but not likely to be the part of a public school curriculum, no matter how fine.

I saw a stranger yestere'en;
I put food in the eating place,
Drink in the drinking place,
Music in the listening place;
And in the sacred name of the Triune
He blessed myself and my house
My cattle and my dear ones.
And the lark said in her song,
  Often, often, often,
Goes Christ in the stranger's guise.
  Often, often, often,
Goes Christ in the stranger's guise.

Brus rose when he heard his father's voice, and left the kid he was skinning, telling Thorfinn the thrall he would be back. He slipped out the door, ran up the rise through the trees to another work shed where Jan, his brother, was bent over a task he loved, carving pictured letters called runes. The task had really been set for Brus.
