A SPY'S LIFE's hero Robert Harland returns in a terrifying post 9/11 thriller. The head of the US National Security Agency is assassinated in a spectacular set piece killing at Heathrow... An airport employee and his family are found murdered in their council house in Uxbridge... In New York, a fashionable Upper East Side osteopath receives two postcards showing the Empire State Building... A group of migrant workers are brutally gunned down in Macedonia... The quest to find the link between these apparently random events is pursued by Robert Harland - drawn back to a world he thought he'd left behind - with a dual role for the UN and MI6.… (mere)

Right rollicking good read..................a fascinating, if in places slightly incredible plot, interesting characters and a real page turner. ( )

A labyrinthine thriller that follows the attempts of the British and American security services to discover the target of an Islamic terrorist plot. The action flows across the world, but centres on London, New York, Albania and Egypt. While the tension never relaxes and the pace never slackens, Porter also raises the question of the use of torture. Is it morally justified? Does it provide reliable information?
Don’t be put off by this – the book is a cracking read.

A good action thriller about an Islamist conspiracy. The action moves from the UK to Albania and Egypt before ending in the US. There's some moralizing about the use of torture of terrorist suspects - the British characters are opposed to it, the Americans condone it while the Egyptians and Albanians actually do it. The political infighting at the British security service is an interesting commentary on the inherent stupdity of bureaucracies everywhere. The team of Harland and Herrick hopefully will emerge again in Porter's writings. ( )
