A brilliant and prescient story about corporate/ 1%/ patriarchy rule, reality television, teleremote systems, product placement, and our obsession with the beautiful. Hard to believe it was written in 1973.

When it comes to the outlook for humanity, Tiptree was not an optimist. Unfortunately for us, she seems to have known what she was talking about. ( )

I liked this story. There were parts where I had to read a few times to get. The narrator sounds like (s)he is telling the story to someone and occasionally that someone asks questions or comments and the narrator responds but the reader only sees one side of the conversation. Also, the someone the narrator is talking to knows a bit more about this futuristic world than me, as the reader, knows so I felt a bit out of it for parts of it but overall, I really liked the story. Proseguiamo nel nostro recupero di Alice Sheldon, nota come James Tiptree Jr, con uno dei suoi racconti piu' famosi, vincitore del Premio Hugo nel 1974. Un racconto attualissimo critico contro il capitalismo affaristico della logica del profitto, i media e le multinazionali, narrato con stile perfetto.
E' la storia di una ragazza brutta, povera, e che adora, come tutti quanti, gli "dei" della Tv.
Alla quale capita un miracolo; avendo tentato il suicidio proprio davanti alla sede dell'emittente che trasmette i programmi dei suoi idoli, le viene offerta la possibilità di diventare come loro; al prezzo di rinunciare alla propria, vita.
Infatti, la collegano ad un corpo sintetico perfetto, tramite il quale vivrà una nuova vita, ma che presto scoprirà piena di limitazioni,
Lei, e altri come lei, "recitano" in telenovelas infinite per fare pubblicità . Ma è anche una storia d'amore...
"Controllo totale delle comunicazioni. Hanno condizionato le menti di tutti quanti perché pensino quel che gli mostrano, e gli mostrano quello che sono programmati a volere '.. ." (Non vi viene in mente niente sull'Italia di oggi?)
