Not surprised that the contributors are pretty much all British academics from the same area, and that certainly explains why there are so many titles from certain British authors. Even if they work in different academic fields, all the contributors are part of the same reading culture, so of course there are 10 Dickens novels included, but no Ray Bradbury, and 4 Doris Lessing books make the list, but only 1 by Barbara Kingsolver and none by Julia Alvarez. It's still a good list to start from to discover new books worth reading, but if it occasionally feels like homework-reading going through this list's books, it's probably because some of the titles were included not because the books are actually great, but rather because the books fit in nicely with some academic's pet thesis about fiction. ( ) I just bought this book used for $2.99. It's the 2008 edition. I have read 67 of these books. I see there's a group out there on Goodreads reading through this, I am going to check them out. It's a surprising list. Some books are obviously on there. Other books - well? I can't give an opinion yet on some of those I've never heard of. It must all be ultimately subjective but some books have stood the test of time and some of the more recent ones - who knows? Will we be reading them 100 years from now? I'm counting this book as read because I've read bits and pieces. I read the entire articles on the books I've read and skimmed some of those I'm considering reading or was just curious about. One of the books I'm currently reading is in here (The Stone Diaries) so it's soon to be 68 for me. Got this book as a Christmas present and had a fun couple of hours counting how many of the books I'd already read (111 although my counting got worse the more I drank so I can't be absolutely sure of that). I've no intention of using this to shape my future reading but I have joined the group and started a new bookshelf for these books. If I happen to read something that coincides with the books this list contains then I'll mark them off. This book is seriously flawed in my opinion, but Ellen's review here sums it up so I shalln't bother to reiterate. This massive tome contains a list of books you should read voted on by respected editors and other folk. The list is easy enough to find I guess, and I don't feel like typing the thing out. This book contains the list, and each item of the list contains information about who wrote it and the approximate date of initial publication. The list is organized Chronologically by date of release and sometimes has an image relating to the book in question. Sometimes it is a cover, other times it is a work of art relating to it and so on. It is really like a compressed printed form of Goodreads that has been printed out and curated. If you want something to read, this book has 1001 suggestions for you. Five out of Five stars. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
