DNF. I read three Dennis Lehane novels pre-librarything (pre-2009): Mystic River, Prayers for Rain, and Sacred. I didn't recall the books thus gave them two stars. Librarything average rating is upper three, low four. I saw Small Mercies had a solid 4.25 average rating. I gave it a shot, and glad I did. Very violent book and well done. Before getting to Prayers for Rain, I read The Given Day. That book was also entertaining, though had annoying parts. I gave Small Mercies and The Given Day four stars. Unfortunately, I then started Prayers for Rain. I did not enjoy it. I think some of the dialog and situations were supposed to be humorous, but it did not work. I see the reason for my original comment:

Not DL's best K&G novel but it is a good Boston story with all of its descriptive and character components. DL sets place and scene well but some of these paragraphs could be shortened. Bubba gets more and more comic book like and getting his beautiful ex-girlfriend? The story seemed to move more quickly than usual and there could have been more bad guy retaliation. Also settling the score with Stevie Z. would have work at the end. Still enjoyed DL's insights on life, the Catholic Church and growing up in Boston. After this there was a lull in the K&G stories from DL. Hopefully there will be a few more. ( )

Sigh...no safety on a revolver people. Other than that, a pretty decent outing and what we thought would be the finale. Frankly, it should have been. ( )

Builds and holds the tension very well... unpredictable to the end ( )

BUBBA. ♥ man, this book was great. i'll never forgive dennis lehane for ending this series, but i'm glad it ended well. ( )
