"John Porcellino has long been considered one of the greatest cartoonists to come from the self-publishing and zine movement of the early '90s. His spare approach to words and pictures focuses on the smallest of details, revealing a wealth of meaning and emotion in everyday events that most of us overlook in our daily hustle and bustle. Since 1989, he has released over 65 issues of his self-published King-Cat Comics and Stories. This large collection provides a comprehensive overview of the first fifty issues, with extensive endnotes, an index, and selections of all the extra features that make an individual King-Cat its own unique experience - essays, articles, stories, and letters from friends. Included are nearly 300 pages of comics, documenting the transition from Porcellino's earliest scrawls to his later, perfectly minimalist delineations. The subject matter reflects all of Porcellino's concerns - family, family pets, the natural world, work, music, romance." "King-Cat Classix presents an artist who has always known what he wanted to do; it demonstrates Porcellino's confidence and skill as they've grown steadily throughout the years."--Jacket.… (mere)

I love John Porcellino's drawing style, neat, crisp and simple. This book is interesting because you get to see that style evolve from his early comics in the late 80s. I like the grab-bag, stream of consciousness comics in this compilation. Some made me confused, some made me sad, some made me laugh out loud. ( )

John's comics are about the uneventful events in life. his drawings (which become much better over time) are sparse and simple. it's visual poetry. he writes about watching brown leaves and acorns fall to the ground, sleeping under trees at rest stops, traveling the country, taking road trips to watch birds and breathe. this collection says so much about who John is, i feel like i know him so well. i feel like we could be best friends. we could eat fried eggs together and not have to say a word. some of his comics are so true, yet still so simple. poignant. some of them i want to frame and put on a wall so visitors will know just who i am. read this! it will touch your soul.
