Gr 4 Up—July Chen has a secret: she can see ghosts. When she meets a boy who’s trapped between life and
death, she tries to save him, only to find their fates are more intertwined than either could imagine. This touching and emotional story contains an enticing mix of friendship, love, Chinese mythology, and magical dumplings.

Ghost Book is a kindhearted and incredibly sweet middle grade graphic novel by Remy Lai that explores the nature of death and the afterlife through the use of Chinese mythology. It is about a human girl who seems to be easily forgotten teams up with a ghost boy who seems to get himself into a lot of near-death experiences to find a way for him to keep his human form. Little do they both know just how their histories are connected. Fans of Spirited Away, Coco, and Neil Gaiman should enjoy this story. It is one of the best graphic novels I've read all year. And I think this book is highly deserving of some awards. Remy Lai has a very charming art story and is an incredibly gifted storyteller. ( )

Cute illustrations. Lovely look at friendship & loss in a folktale like story. ( )

July Chen wanders through her own life, almost like a ghost, until she teams up with a boy who's stuck in-between...but then they find that in order to bring him back to life, she might need to sacrifice hers. Filled with Hungry Ghosts, delicious (and magical) dumplings, and even a trip to the Underworld, this is a culturally sensitive story that's perfect for those who want something a little spooky. ( )
