I purchased this book for graduate school class called Boy Readers, Boy Writers, and found it to be quite appealing. I shared it with both children and adults, and both enjoyed reading about the obscure, quirky, forgotten or little-known facts of the baseball world of the past. The author brings in outdated and modern baseball vocabulary on the outskirts of the pages, and offers information and stories about famous players, making it as educational as it is entertaining. The illustrations almost made it feel as though it were a graphic novel, which would make it especially appealing to those children who tend to favor that genre. I think this would be an ideal book for middle or upper level elementary students, in particular boys, who may be hesitant to read lengthy novels, but would like the meatiness and easy-to-read format of this informational text. This was truly an exceptional book. It was full of odd, fascinating information and trivia about the history of baseball. The text was presented with an overabundance of colorful terminology that allowed the reader to familiarize him or herself with the games more colorful vocabulary while continuing to learn about the transformations that the game has undergone since its inception. I didn't know at least half of the facts I found in this text. The illustrations were quaint and colorful. They gave the text extra life. This is a great edition to anyone's nonfiction collection. Baseball today isn't how it used to be. In the early days everyone didn't wear the same color or style uniform since they were all on their own to find one. The players didn't even wear numbers for the fans to be able to tell who was who. What a difference decades make, today the game is so much different and this book shows u how.
