Book Summary: This informational book presents a wide variety of information all about oceans and the animals who live near the ocean shore as well as under the sea. This book also discusses shorelines and how sand is formed. It goes into the history of ocean exploration as well as the ocean mysteries.

Content Summary: This book is an informational book but it presents the information in a more exciting way using pictures and illustrations. This is a book for upper level elmentary students as the vocabulary and sentence structures are more difficult.

Book and author summaries from dust jacket flaps:

...The Kingfisher Young People's Book of Oceans examines [oceans] from every angle, including the most up-to-date [as of 1997] exploration of the seas by means of submersibles, underwater cameras, and oceanographic satellites...The book also stresses the importance of protecting our oceans and the life in them from the environmental damage caused by overfishing, oil spills, and other forms of pollution. The ocean holds the key to where we came from and, in many ways, the key to our future.

David Lambert is the author of nine non-fiction books on seas and oceans, including the award-winning Seashores. He has written more than eighty books for children and adults, mostly on earth sciences. He lives in Southeastern England, where the coastline is rich in mud flats and beaches.
