When Ryan and his crew kidnap Edric Samuels, the teenage son of a billionaire, it doesn't take long for fractures to appear in their carefully constructed plan. The walls close in and the once good friends are suddenly at each other's throats. Things look bad-but they're about to get a whole lot worse. Edric is not an ideal prisoner, and soon pacifying the boy is their only option. Sometimes they use a needle, other times, their fists. But what his captors don't know is that each time he falls down the rabbit hole, Edric's nightmares are training him to be a killing machine. Are these hallucinations from the drugs . . . or are they something much darker? Once set on this path of revenge, Edric won't stop until his enemies are hollow shells of blood and bone.… (mere)

Among the Ruins is a fun read with a unique concept. Edric, a rich teen is kidnapped and held for ransom by an interesting crew. They use a homebrewed concoction to keep him complacent. What his captors don't know is every time Edric is unconscious something is changing inside their victim. They won't have the upper hand for long.

Really interesting idea, I enjoyed the mythology tidbits. The middle slogged a bit, Edric's training and captivity became monotonous. The end had tons of action.

For me the biggest downside was the character development. I can't say I developed a connection to any of the characters.
Example:
Ryan, one of the captors, oscillates between no remorse and feeling sorry. He shot a cop early on during the kidnapping and doesn't seem phased by that but is bothered by holding Edric captive.

Overall an interesting idea, the only thing holding this back for me was some elements of the execution. If you Kindle Unlimited Among the Ruins is currently available through them!
