"Beto won't wear a guayabera to the wedding. Nope! Nunca! Not going to happen! Beto tries his best to rid himself of the traditional Mexican wedding shirt his Mami gave him. He even gets help from his dog Lupe, but the shirt ends up back on his bed each time with notes from Mami, who becomes increasingly frustrated with Beto. Mami insists that Beto attend the wedding, and wear the shirt, because--after all--it's her wedding! Beto has to accept the fact that Mami is getting remarried and that she wants him to wear the shirt, which is part of his heritage."--Amazon.… (mere)

Wonderfully illustrated, this children's picture book is engaging and will teach many children about culture's other than their own. Beto isn't very excited for his mami's wedding - especially since she wants him to wear a guayabera to the wedding, traditional Mexican wedding shirt with four pockets. Beto keeps finding clever ways to tell his mother no - but what if his reluctance is about more than the shirt? Heartfelt and endearing this book is about family, traditions, and opening our heart to others. ( )

I enjoyed reading this book and learning about this Mexican tradition. I did not know the origin of the guayabera, and was happy to learn about it. Not only did this sweet story inform us about the tradition, it brought up thoughts about losing a parent a parents remarrying. This book definitely lends itself to starting these conversations with children if applicable. I loved the length of the story and the colorful pictures throughout the book. I wish there was a Spanish/English dictionary. However, it is pretty easy to infer the meaning of the Spanish words included. Thanks for writing a creative, thoughtful and informative book! ( )

This is a lovely children’s book about change and growth through the wearing of a traditional Mexican wedding shirt. Beto, the main character, does not want to wear the Guayabera; as the story continues you find out that it is for his mother’s wedding to his future step-dad.

My children enjoyed this story quite a bit; the illustrations were fun and kept their attention. I really enjoy books that have a “Reader questions guide” when it comes to children’s books, and that can be found in the front of the book. After the story, there is an Author’s note about the history of the guayabera. Following that is information on the Author and illustrator.
On the Cardinalrulepress website there are free coloring pages and Reader activities to go along with with this book to explore the topic more. ( )

A fun and engaging children's book about a difficult life change (mom is remarrying, dad likely passed away but is gone in general) that is lighthearted and whimsical enough for even the youngest of readers to enjoy and comprehend. Vibrant illustrations and a story that is really told very well for easy readers. Love the notes back and forth between the characters. An informative section on the Guayabera at the end too!
