"This is the story of a boy who died--and a girl who wants to know why. Todd Mayer is dead. Now he's some sort of ghost, hovering over his body, which has just been found in the town park, naked and frozen in the snow. As detectives investigate Todd's homicide, talking to the very people who are responsible for how he died, Todd replays the events that lead him to his end in the park. Georgia didn't know Todd. But she can't stop thinking about him. Maybe it's because they're both outcasts at their school, or because they're both queer. It might also be because Georgia has a feeling she's seen Todd somewhere before, somewhere he wasn't supposed to be. In the vein of The Lovely Bones, this dual narrative is told through the voices of Todd in his afterlife and Georgia as she uncovers the truth behind his death, resulting in an immersive, emotional, and provocative read."--… (mere)

This was a slow burn mystery about Todd and Georgia, two gay teens connected to each other by Todd’s murder. A who-done-it that leaves you guessing until the end. A story of two teens figuring out their place in life, even though one is dead. Told from alternating perspectives of Todd, the ghost & Georgia, a wanna-be detective who isn’t actively trying to figure out who killed Todd, she just begins to piece things together, with an answer that leaves her reeling. I look forward to interviewing Ms. Tamaki at TLA!

TW: homophobia; murder; sex scenes ( )

Chapters alternate between Todd, who is dead, and Georgia. Todd's body is found naked in a park. He's died of hypothermia. As he follows around the investigators and gives a bit of insight into his life, Georgia wonders about it. Georgia is at the nearby all girls school and she doesn't think she knows Todd until she sees a picture and realizes that he had been at their house to visit her brother, Mark. Georgia's penchant for police procedural shows and her drive to know, lead her to continue interest.
This mystery is a slow burn with a lot of focus on internal identity and relationships. But for a patient reader, there is a payoff. ( )

I feel like I would've like this book a lot more if I were younger.

I don't usually care about the writing style in a book as long as it's enjoyable but this one was just a no.

To begin with, the book is told by the perspective of Todd's ghost, (yes, you read right, ghost) and Georgia who barely knew Todd and has, like, nothing to do with his murder investigation.

Then, there's what I call the YELLING CAPITAL LETTERS. There was a lot of them in this book which, again, I think I could've liked it but I just found them irritating.

All that apart, the story was entertaining and enjoyable.

The beggining was kinda slow but at some point I was really into the story and couldn't stop until I knew who was Todd's "murder". ( )

This is a messy tale and I intend that as a compliment. It's so in that it has elements and characters that twist and swirl, much like real life does when things go badly awry. All Todd wanted was to survive and maybe make a friend. Instead, he froze to death in a ravine at the end of a park. Once you know this, you're grabbed by the collar and hauled along in alternating viewpoints, Todd's as a ghost and Georgia's as a girl also trying to get by and maybe have a true friend. The deeper you read into their views of events, the more you can't help but have empathy for both. as well as for the teacher who did his best to help Todd, but ended up getting kicked in the teeth for his efforts. The ending isn't surprising, but is one that makes sense. LBGTQ teens will find plenty in this book, and it's one that most libraries should own. ( )

teen fiction/mystery - told in alternating viewpoints of the ghost of a friendless 17 y.o. queer boy whose body is found in a park and a (also queer) girl who may be able to unravel the mystery of his death. ( )
