Romance. Humor (Fiction.) Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:??Pitch-perfect. One of the most endearing teen voices I??ve ever encountered.? ??Becky Albertalli, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

For fans of Sandhya Menon and Adam Silvera comes a prom-night romantic-comedy romp about a Sikh teen's search for love and identity.
Sunny G's brother left him one thing when he died: His notebook, which Sunny is determined to fill up with a series of rash decisions. Decision number one was a big one: He stopped wearing his turban, cut off his hair, and shaved his beard. He doesn't look like a Sikh anymore. He doesn't look like himself anymore. Even his cosplay doesn't look right without his beard.

Sunny debuts his new look at prom, which he's stuck going to alone. He's skipping the big fandom party??the one where he'd normally be in full cosplay, up on stage playing bass with his band and his best friend, Ngozi??in favor of the Very Important Prom Experience. An experience that's starting to look like a bust.

Enter Mindii Vang, a girl with a penchant for making rash decisions of her own, starting with stealing Sunny's notebook. When Sunny chases after her, prom turns into an all-night adventure??a night full of rash, wonderful, romantic, stupid, life-changing decisions.

Sunny G is missing his older brother who has just died. While he tried treatment several times, in the end his alcoholism took his life. With his brother's art therapy notebook, he decides to try a night of rash decisions. He meets Mandii and they form a strong connection as they take turn introducing each other to components of their respective cultures. They try food, drink, spoken word poetry, and have all these adventures in their cosplay outfits. A fun, healing night as both teens are grieving losses of important people in their lives. ( )

I enjoyed learning about Sikh Punjabi culture and religion through the eyes of the endearing main character, Sunny. The story was warm and humorous but I think the plot meandered around a bit so I never felt connected to the characters. There was a lot of reference to a fandom anime thingy I know nothing about so that created more distance. I really liked the characters there just needed to be more story development. Just okay for me.

This book is definitely made up of Sunny’s rash decisions that were pure amusement but also let him to the discovery that it’s ok to be yourself; that it’s ok to be mad at those who left before you and not understanding the “why” and to learning that friendships don’t end just because people move on. I did get lost in a lot of the cos-play references, but it didn’t detract from the story. The burgeoning romance between Mindii & Sunny was sweet and left me rooting for them to the end. The scene between Sunny & Goldy definitely brings out all the feels (no spoilers!) ( )

Am I the only person who felt as if entire pages were missing in several scenes? Events come out of nowhere, characters reference things that haven't happened, confrontations just...don't have endings. I love Sunny and his friends. I love the many microcosms of fandom. I love all the elements of Sikh and Hmong culture, especially in needle- and threadcrafting. But this was so disconnected from itself at times that I wondered if the editor was even paying attention. (Given the typos and vanishing punctuation, perhaps not.) I can only hope Dhillon's next book will be more coherent. ( )

teen fiction - Punjabi-American cosplay-loving Sikh teen living in Fresno, CA copes with grief after the death of his alcoholic brother, with the help of a new friend (who happens to be Hmong) and several clashes with various fandoms.

This was an easy, fun read with light romance. The first book I've ever read with a Sikh protagonist 👍. ( )

For all the brown nerds, especially Shaiyar and Kavya.

This book would be terribly dull without you. May you keep writing fanfiction, be as intense and passionate about your fandoms as Sunny and Mindii, and never let any ullu da pattha mispronounce your name or ask for your nerd credentials. You are my favourites. Please don’t start a heavy metal sorcerer band.

To Navreet, Mum, and Pappari: Sorry for swearing in all the languages you tried to instill high culture.

You brought this on yourselves, innit.
