Fun throw back to 1980s monster films like The Thing and Aliens with a lovecraftian twist. Reminded me a bit of "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr. (which inspired the movie "The Thing", directed by John Carpenter). Only these lifeforms are really into complicated math for some reason. Another “similarity” in this story is the character Lacome, who seems to be, exactly, Burke from the movie “Aliens”. I mean exactly! Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that their dialogue is the same too! Is this an homage, or plagiarism? editor's note: I learned in the piece "Taking the Plunge", after the end of the story, that the story is, in part, an homage to Carpenter's "The Thing". But there is no mention of "Aliens"... Also, the back cover looks a lot like a scene from "Aliens" too... Overall, I enjoyed reading this, which isn't a surprise because I LOVED those two movies! The math and science in this book bogged down the story for me, as I didn't understand either of them. But the characters are good, and I liked the "shout out" to the Cthulhu mythos as well! Artwork is pretty dang good too! Not a terribly original story, but not a bad read either! Joe Hill says this is a tribute to the works of H. P. Lovecraft and the films of John Carpenter. Neither of those guys do much for me, which might explain why this book didn't do much for me. I was annoyed that math stuff was thrown around like it was important to the series but was really used for nothing but window dressing. Mentioning pi does not make this men vs. monsters tale deeper or more interesting. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse
"In 1983, a state-of-the-art drilling ship, the Derleth, vanished near the Arctic Circle. Decades later, it has begun sending a distress call... Tracing the signal to a remote atoll in the Bering Strait, the Rococo oil company hires the Carpenter brothers and their salvage crew to investigate the ghost ship. Joined by a marine biologist and an oil executive, the brothers set out on a grim mission to learn what caused the disappearance and recover the bodies of the crew...only to find that the Derleth's men aren't dead! Even if they're also not quite...alive...anymore."-- Ingen biblioteksbeskrivelser fundet. |
