This is the delightful third book of the "Parish Orphans of Devon" series and while the first one is still my favourite, I liked this more than the second one.
The male protagonist is Alex Archer, the one orphan that we have not met so far because he left his circle of friends a long time ago. In this story he meets Laura Hayes, who lives together with her disabled brother and whose finances have been controlled by a sinister solicitor since her father has died. Of course the two are drawn to each other, and bit by bit we learn about Alex's past and why he left Devon as a young man.

I loved both of the main characters, and while the plot is of course a bit predictable, it was exciting enough to hold my interest throughout. I also enjoyed the connections to the first two installments and learning more about the back story of the orphans as well as meeting some of the characters already known. I cannot wait to read the fourth book, although I will be said to finish this wonderful series! ( )

I enjoyed this. A fortune hunting hero with an inconvenient connection with a non-heiress. It's fun when characters are drawn to each other against their best efforts/in spite of themselves. This had some sweet moments between the two likable leads. ( )

August 1860 Surrey. Three years have passed since Laura Hayes’s father died. Her invalid brother and Laura having to survive on the income from her father's failing perfume business. Their business affairs managed by solicitor Weatherwax
Alex Archer wants to marry for the land an heiress can provide and maneuvers George Wright, vicar's son, into an introduction to Henrietta Talbot, his lifelong friend and neighbour. But what of Archers' troubled past which started at the orphanage in North Devon.
Although the third in the series, it is easily read as a standalone story, though I would recommend the first two books as they are both an enjoyable read.
A delightful, well-written romance story, with such a group of likeable well-portrayed characters.

A Convenient Fiction - Matthews

Third book of three in Matthews’ Parish Orphans series. Alex Archer is looking for a rich wife with property. He is also running from his past. He falls for a not-so-rich wife and his past catches up to him. A sweet, predictable, Victorian love story. A pleasant way to pass a few hours with easy reading. ( )

This was return to form for me for this series. I liked all the cast: even Henrietta, Teddy and George were well-drawn characters in their own right and the vicar was treated sympathetically. I'm not sure George's 'services' were quite worth the enormous debt he owed, but that's just a niggle. ( )
