The 2013-2014 Ebola epidemic was the deadliest ever--but the outbreaks continue. Now comes a gripping account of the doctors and scientists fighting to protect us, an urgent wake-up call about the future of emerging viruses--from the #1 bestselling author of The Hot Zone, soon to be a National Geographic original miniseries. This time, Ebola started with a two-year-old child who likely had contact with a wild creature and whose entire family quickly fell ill and died. The ensuing global drama activated health professionals in North America, Europe, and Africa in a desperate race against time to contain the viral wildfire. By the end--as the virus mutated into its deadliest form, and spread farther and faster than ever before--30,000 people would be infected, and the dead would be spread across eight countries on three continents. In this taut and suspenseful medical drama, Richard Preston deeply chronicles the outbreak, in which we saw for the first time the specter of Ebola jumping continents, crossing the Atlantic, and infecting people in America. Rich in characters and conflict--physical, emotional, and ethical--Crisis in the Red Zone is an immersion in one of the great public health calamities of our time. Preston writes of doctors and nurses in the field putting their own lives on the line, of government bureaucrats and NGO administrators moving, often fitfully, to try to contain the outbreak, and of pharmaceutical companies racing to develop drugs to combat the virus. He also explores the charged ethical dilemma over who should and did receive the rare doses of an experimental treatment when they became available at the peak of the disaster. Crisis in the Red Zone makes clear that the outbreak of 2013-2014 is a harbinger of further, more severe outbreaks, and of emerging viruses heretofore unimagined--in any country, on any continent. In our ever more interconnected world, with roads and towns cut deep into the jungles of equatorial Africa, viruses both familiar and undiscovered are being unleashed into more densely populated areas than ever before. The more we discover about the virosphere, the more we realize its deadly potential. Crisis in the Red Zone is an exquisitely timely book, a stark warning of viral outbreaks to come.… (mere)

I listened to the audio version of this and I would like to commend the narrator (Ray Porter) for having a great voice and reading this so well. Unlike other comments (on the print version) I found this to be well written/read and very easy to follow.

That said this is a chilling topic and the Epilogue leaves one with much to think of, and leaves you with sympathy and regret for those who lost their lives in the battle against this particular foe. While not the usual Halloween fare, it’s definitely scary enough to keep, you up at night if you let it.

Recommended for those interested in this topic, virology, and global epidemics and health.

Terrifying. What an unbelievably killer virus. The part about one particle a virus is enough to kill you really stuck with me. Really admire the people attempting to eradicate and solve this mystery. Will have to look for an updated Paula book to see how we’re doing on the vaccine. Quite the page turner though. ( )

Near the end it becomes maudlin and fear-mongering. It's not written well enough to pull that off. ( )

This is Richard Preston's follow-up to his 1994 bestselling non-fiction thriller "The Hot Zone," which was about filoviruses, such as Ebola and Marburg. In "Crisis in the Red Zone," Preston covers the Ebola outbreak of 2013-2014. Preston has a way of writing his non-fiction books like fiction thrillers. They are tautly written with plenty of cliff-hanging chapters.

Reading this in the age of COVID-19 really makes me wonder at how prescient Preston was regarding future viruses. This book was published in 2019, right before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Everything Preston discusses about possible future epidemics really hit home. He even mentions monkeypox, which we are seeing as a continued threat as I write this. In addition, Preston's discussion of how to end an epidemic shows exactly why we're not able to end the COVID-19 pandemic -- people won't follow directions and listen to medical and scientific experts.

Ebola has always been a terrifying virus, and it is no less terrifying in this book. However, now that the world has been dealing with COVID-19 and all its mutations, one can see that, in a way, COVID-19 is worse, because it is airborne. Preston's book shows how resilient viruses are in their ability to jump species and mutate to stay alive. The book also shows the bleak reality of what happens when medical facilities become overwhelmed and the unfair advantages of the haves versus the have-nots. The book is a warning that viral outbreaks will continue to happen, and what are we as humans going to do to prepare to fight them? ( )
