"Single mother Maisey Addington has always fallen short of her own mother's expectations--never married, a bit adrift, wasting her high IQ on dead-end jobs. The only thing Maisey's sure she's gotten right is her relationship with her twelve-year-old daughter, Elle ... until a phone call blows apart the precarious balance of their lives. Maisey's mother is in a coma, and her aging father faces charges of abuse and neglect. Back at her childhood home, Maisey must make a heartrending life-or-death decision. Her confused father has destroyed family records, including her mother's final wishes. Searching for answers, Maisey uncovers one unspeakable secret after another when she stumbles upon a shattering truth: a twin sister named Marley. Maisey's obsession with solving the mystery of her sister forces her to examine her darkest memories and triggers a custody battle with Elle's father. Will Maisey's love for her daughter be strong enough to break a cycle of abuse and create a new beginning for them all?"--Dust jacket flap.… (mere)

This started out feeling like a psychological thriller, but then it turned into a rather typical story about abuse. ( )

An above-average suspense/thriller about Maisey Addington, who upon the death of her mother discovers that her childhood "imaginary friend" Marley was based on a real-life twin sister from whom she was separated at a very young age. Who did the separating, and why, and what it means for Maisey's relationship with her own daughter, forms the heart of the story. I thought the apparently obligatory romantic subplot was a bit over-the-top and unrealistic but the rest of the story kept me turning the pages at a brisk pace. One note of warning: This isn't a book for people who have an aversion to stories about domestic violence. ( )

I am just amazed at how beautiful and heart-wrenching this story is. I got it as an Amazon First Reads a while back. I kept putting off reading it because, honestly, I just didn't like the cover. Loa. But I am very happy I finally gave it the time of day!

This book is about women who overcame abusive relationships and the struggle they went through to get there. For someone who had a relationship that was heading in the direction, I very much can verify some of the emotions these girls went through. Thankfully, I had a father who had taught me self-worth and I was able to remove myself before things got this bad.

For those of you who have never understood why women stay in abusive relationships, I would highly recommend reading this book. It brought me even more clarification to something I have sought to understand in the past. ( )

If Maisey Addington is anything like how she describes herself in this book, it is amazing that she can even function. Maisey Addington returns to Colville when her mother is taken to the hospital. Her mother Leah dies, which brings up many secrets that were kept her entire life. Maisey stumbles around in an attempt to deal with her mother's death, her father's seeming incompetence, and her child's father's emotional control, while being befriended by Tony Medina's family. Tony was a firefighter who responded to a fire in her father's house, right after her mother was taken to the hospital. ( )

This book starts with what feels like an immature MC and simple writing style. But folks, it turns out there’s a reason for it as we learn about the MC’s life to explain why she is the way she is. As secrets unfold, the characters grow and the writing also becomes more complex. Meaningful character development as it explores the impact of family violence on multiple generations. Impressive. Stick with it—worth it. I admit: there were tears. ( )
