When Perdita Tree, the bored and beautiful wife of a conservative Member of Parliment, is kidnapped in Albania, she decides it is one huge adventure. Adored by her kidnapper, who thinks all things English are prefect, she is persuaded to rescue the Albanians from their dire history, and is vain enough to imagine that she can. The year is 1991, democracy is coming, are the Albanians ready for it? And are they ready for Perdita?… (mere)

The best thing I can say about it is that I've honestly never read anything quite like it before. The next best thing, that I'll seek out more by this author. And finally, upon reading the last page, "this is all there is to it, after all that? really?"

Is Perdita a made for binge watching series on Acorn yet? Maybe there she should be and we could get some closure ? She has a lot of loose ends ! ( )

A Sloane Ranger goes missing in Albania
By sally tarbox on 7 April 2017
Format: Kindle Edition
An entertaining bit of chick-lit: Perdita Tree, the Sloane-Rangery wife of a stick-in-the mud Tory MP, is in Greece on a solitary holiday. Dissatisfied with her marriage and life as a rich but shallow young mother, she embarks on an expedition over the border to Albania.
It's 1991, the country is just emerging from Hoxha's dictatorship, and Perdita first finds herself detained by fiercesome but exciting Kukaj :

"They interrogated me over four days. When I'd had their assurances that they weren't going to torture me, the truth is I rather enjoyed it. I've come to the conclusion that interrogation is rather like therapy... I was so obviously happy to talk and be the centre of attention hour after hour.."

But then she is kidnapped by the adoring Alfred....
I liked Perdita, she was a convincing character, as was husband Nicholas, whose problems back home are related in alternate chapters. Alfred was wholly implausible and their whole time together was rather silly. But an enjoyable bit of escapism for all that. ( )
