From Kirkus: "Though it could easily feel preachy, this charmingly subversive tale instead offers a simple yet powerful story of the importance of being seen and affirmed." Full disclosure. I have had this book above my desk for quite some time now. And every time I think I have an idea of how I want to write my review.....I change my mind. I thought this book was going to win Caldecott. 100 percent. And largely because of the subject matter. It didn't which made me procrastinate reviewing it. The book is beautifully illustrated and conveys a story well. After all, it is mostly wordless so the illustrations HAVE to tell the story. My only issue is that I am not fully sure what story it seeks to convey. It's the story of Julian who dresses up as a mermaid. Is it because he just likes to dress up? Is it because he is transgender? Is he wanting to be a drag queen? Is the mermaid thing a euphemism for something? I feel really stupid that I am incredibly unsure but that's the truth. My worldview and my job collide with this book. Daily I encounter children that are similar to Julian. And people want to always find themselves in literature. (Trust me, I would love to find a white female protagonist who was a Christian, homeschooled, (little bit) feminist, virgin yet isn't portrayed as a bigot. If that exists, let me know!!) So again, I see why "Julian is a Mermaid" is a necessary book and why it should be in library collections. Then, though, there is my faith and I struggle with the whole topic of gender. I believe we were made by God one way. He doesn't make mistakes. So yeah. Make of this book what you will. Be prepared for discussions with kids. I'd be curious your thoughts. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

While riding the subway home from the pool with his abuela one day, Julián notices three women spectacularly dressed up. Their hair billows in brilliant hues, their dresses end in fishtails, and their joy fills the train car. When Julián gets home, daydreaming of the magic he's seen, all he can think about is dressing up just like the ladies in his own fabulous mermaid costume: a butter-yellow curtain for his tail, the fronds of a potted fern for his headdress. But what will Abuela think about the mess he makes -- and even more importantly, what will she think about how Julián sees himself? Ingen biblioteksbeskrivelser fundet. |
