Don Eyr fer'Gasta clan Serat is unwanted by his uncle, the delm, after the death of his mother, but he grudingly accepts him because there's no alternative that doesn't involve loss of honor. He's left to the care of the House staff, and learns to cook and bake, until his cousin the na'delm returns from school. After some mild intervention, Don Eyr is offered his choice of school, preferably offworld, away from the delm. He chooses the Ecole de Cuisine, on Lutetia, and is accepted.

Twelve years later, he's a graduate, is teaching some classes there, and beginning to make plans for what he'll do next. He meets Captain Serana Benoit, of the Watch, after he protects one of his students from the unwanted attentions of a member of the Council, and becomes a target in his turn. They're making their own plans, when Don Eyr is summoned home to Liad by his delm, for reasons that prove to be less honorable than implied.

It's on Liad, with Don Eyr trapped for the moment by his uncle's greed and mismanagement, that Don Eyr and Serana begin to develop a plan of action, and a newset of goals for their future. Oh, and for the impoverished and abandoned residents of Low Port.

This is, as always, an interesting and enjoyable visit to the Liaden universe, with fun, adventure, and decent, admirable characters as our protagonists. We keep getting glimpses of new and different parts of that universe.

Recommended.

I bought this book. ( )

Too much telling!

Although I haven't read the other 26 books in this series, I was assured this tale was stand-alone. I agree with this as I had no trouble or sense of feeling lost by setting or characters. The first-chapter sample I read before purchase predictably conveyed setting and sketched out the main character's background. Unfortunately, that pure-exposition style carried through the entire book! The only time characters conveyed their desires was through infrequent and very brief snippets of dialogue. The authors hand-waved years with simple sentences, "that is how the first two years went."

Technically, the writing is sound. The trouble is, it's hard for me to feel anything when all I know about the character is told to me. The authors' style feels very distancing from the story itself, as if these are not real people but characters made conveniently for the purpose of story. I simply cannot connect with them when their lives are told to me as if they are dry curiosities to study. The characters' situations were interesting but in my opinion, this tale could be told better or given more life than it has if it could be freed from its heavy, expository style. ( )

This novella visits Liad and Liaden culture from a new viewpoint. Don Eyr fer'Gasta is an unwanted son of Clan Serat. The Delm is a paranoid gambler who leaves him to the care of servants. He is raised by them and develops and interest and a talent for baking. When he comes halfling, he is brought to the Delm's attention. The Delm still doesn't want him and has him sent away. He is sent to Lutetia to attend a culinary school where he spends a number of years. There he meets Captain Serana Benoit of the Lutetia City Watch. She teaches him self-defense and they become lovers. When she gets on the wrong end of a political mess, they have to leave. Just about that time, the Delm calls Don Eyr home. He goes because it is duty and Serana goes with him. He finds that the Delm has given him to a disreputable man to be a servant. One of his tasks is to clear some land in Low Port where he finds a bunch of clanless kids in need of protection. He needs to find a way to get free of his obligation to Serat in order to set up a new life for himself protecting those children. This was an excellent story that tells about a negative of the clan system and what it is like to be outside it. It was also a story of an honorable man trying to live an honorable life. ( )
