I agree with this as I had no trouble or sense of feeling lost by setting or characters. The first-chapter sample I read before purchase predictably conveyed setting and sketched out the main character's background. Unfortunately, that pure-exposition style carried through the entire book! The only time characters conveyed their desires was through infrequent and very brief snippets of dialogue. The authors hand-waved years with simple sentences, "that is how the first two years went." Technically, the writing is sound. The trouble is, it's hard for me to feel anything when all I know about the character is told to me. The authors' style feels very distancing from the story itself, as if these are not real people but characters made conveniently for the purpose of story. I simply cannot connect with them when their lives are told to me as if they are dry curiosities to study. The characters' situations were interesting but in my opinion, this tale could be told better or given more life than it has if it could be freed from its heavy, expository style. (Who knew the depths of subtlety a qe'andra might employ within the Code? ) Read fast or savored in a second or fourth reading, it's a modest but sustaining masterpiece, like Don Eyr's breads and pastries. Twelve years later, he's a graduate, is teaching some classes there, and beginning to make plans for what he'll do next. He meets Captain Serana Benoit, of the Watch, after he protects one of his students from the unwanted attentions of a member of the Council, and becomes a target in his turn. They're making their own plans, when Don Eyr is summoned home to Liad by his delm, for reasons that prove to be less honorable than implied.
It's on Liad, with Don Eyr trapped for the moment by his uncle's greed and mismanagement, that Don Eyr and Serana begin to develop a plan of action, and a newset of goals for their future. Oh, and for the impoverished and abandoned residents of Low Port.
This is, as always, an interesting and enjoyable visit to the Liaden universe, with fun, adventure, and decent, admirable characters as our protagonists. We keep getting glimpses of new and different parts of that universe.
