It has a dark past - one in which a number of humans were killed. A past that caused it to christen itself Murderbot. But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a research transport vessal named ART (you don't want to know what the A stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue. The Second installment of Martha Wells Murderbot series is very enjoyable. Long enough to throw a story around and short enough keep things moving along. In this Volume Murderbot teams up with eager AI unit and a team of Scientist to retrieve important information. The action is good, and we see our sec unit become a tad more human than he might want to be. But...is he learning to feel and adapt in a way he does not yet understand? ( )

Love Murderbot and I’m glad he found a friend! I hope ART returns in future installments.

Quick read & action packed I feel like these are like a good episode of a sci-fi police procedural TV show. ( )

This novella picks up where the first left off: our confused construct has left its human team behind and is bound for the extragalactic moon where the SecUnit supposedly went on a murderous spree while working at a mining site. It hitches a ride on a transport ship belonging to a university and discovers that the ship is a highly advanced bot whose processing power is more advanced than its own. Murderbot nicknames it ART (Asshole Research Transport), and they bond while watching TV. In order to get onto the mining moon, the SecUnit needs a cover and joins a group of researchers who need a security consultant to help them get back their data. Between researching what really happened at the mining site and dealing with the young researchers, while also keeping its status as a rogue SecUnit under wraps, Murderbot has a lot of balls in the air.

Although I didn't find the story as fast-paced or tightly written as the first novella, Artificial Condition is still an entertaining read, and I continue to find the growth of Murderbot's character compelling. ART was a fun addition to the party, and I look forward to more collaboration between the two as the series continues. ( )

Through some mix-up on my part, I read the third book in this series before this one. Pity, because I'm sure the third would have been more enjoyable in light of this book. Which was quite good, by the way. ( )

Book 2 finds Murderbots has a new life but no purpose. Her grateful clients have purchased her and made her a citizen although she still has to have a guardian. Not true freedom and the world they live on has no use for her kind. She slips away in the night and is assisted by a megamind transport. Off to find her previous life which has been mostly erased, to see if she really is the killer she believes she is. The transport helps change her looks because a rogue construct is to be hunted and destroyed. She finds new clients and is horrified to discover she is beginning to care about some humans. The transport assists her to discover her past and plan a future. It also seems to have a secret as it makes decisions, uses resources and hides it all from its owners. Very short, fun read. ( )

There’s plenty here to entertain the many fans of the first novella.
