Ever since Reyes Farrow escaped from a hell dimension in which Charley Davidson accidentally trapped him, the son of Satan has been brimstone-bent on destroying the world his heavenly Brother created. His volatile tendencies have put Charley in a bit of a pickle. But that's not the only briny vegetable on her plate. While trying to domesticate the feral being that used to be her husband, she also has to deal with her everyday life of annoying all manner of beings--some corporeal, some not so much--as she struggles to right the wrongs of society. Only this time she's not uncovering a murder. This time she's covering one up. Add to that her new occupation of keeping a startup PI venture--the indomitable mystery-solving team of Amber Kowalski and Quentin Rutherford--out of trouble and dealing with the Vatican's inquiries into her beloved daughter, and Charley is on the brink of throwing in the towel and becoming a professional shopper. Or possibly a live mannequin. But when someone starts attacking humans who are sensitive to the supernatural world, Charley knows it's time to let loose her razor sharp claws. Then again, her number one suspect is the dark entity she's loved for centuries. So the question becomes: Can she tame the unruly beast before it destroys everything she's worked so hard to protect?… (mere)

In the penultimate book of the series, Charley Davidson faces her most difficult challenge yet as her husband, Alexander Reyes Farrow, isn't quite himself when he returns from the Hell dimension. In fact, he has literally come back as someone else, namely Rey’aziel, and boy is he p*ssed off at Charley.

Unfortunately, the series has not returned to its former glory. The conflict between Charley and Rey’aziel (Reyes) established at the end of the previous book does not live up to its potential mainly due to the fact that the twist is obvious from the start - no fan of the series (and only true fans are still reading) would believe that Reyes had become so evil as to kill innocent people let alone his own child...

Moreover, the story within a story that basically recaps every event and explanation provided thus far in the series is tiresome and tedious. It feels like Jones had a page count to fill and decided to repeat the entire plot to fulfill her contractual obligations.

Finally, Charley's flirtatious interactions with Garrett and Osh are over the top and not a little bit squicky, especially considering that Osh is Beep's future love interest. I so could have done without those images in my head.

Overall, I'm hanging in there until the end because there is only one book left. I'm not holding my breath for a masterpiece. (

I love this series so much, and the only thing that kept me from enjoying this book as much as I would have otherwise is that I know there is only one book left! Argh!! Well, at least I wasn't disappointed in the story, as it was just as fun as the others. With the series coming to an end, a lot of questions are being answered, which is nice, but at the same time, a lot of new questions are arising, which is also nice. Weird how that works! Basically, we're seeing how everything is tying together, and how all of the previous books have led us to this point, but we're also kept guessing at how everything is going to end. Thank the gods all of our regular characters are still there with Charley, because I would feel totally let down if they weren't. The stakes are being raised, and everybody has a part to play. I'm on the edge of my seat to see how this all plays out!

I love this series - especially the later ones - and even though I enjoyed this one enough to read it in one sitting today, it was not one of her best. Mostly because the plot(s) were utterly transparent. There was never any doubt in my mind what Reyes was looking for, or what would happen when he found it (although the third member of the showdown was a delightful surprise). There was never any doubt in my mind who was responsible for the killings either, although the 'other' murder plot, while not central to much of anything, was interesting and its resolution unexpected.

There are also a few story elements that keep getting repeated in the books - honestly, it's like hell has a revolving door - but Jones still manages to write a captivating, and hilarious, story that expands on biblical mythology while honouring its structure and its spirit. So in spite of not being everything it could be, it was exactly what I needed today. (
