Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive and she is an artist on the brink of an exciting career. But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn't commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy's time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. After five years, Roy's conviction is suddenly overturned, and he returns to Atlanta ready to resume their life together.… (mere)

Superb storytelling, complex and memorable characters, and a spellbinding story. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. ( )

This is a difficult story for me to rate. I had high expectations based on reviews. As it turned out, I really didn’t care for two of the three main characters (Roy and Celestial) but I’m giving 3 stars because it was a page turner for me and I wanted to know how it ended. ( )

Read for my book club.

Interesting plot with a good description of other people's lives. Each chapters structured as one person's voice worked pretty well.

That said, I got tired of it halfway through as it became just one long tragedy with unlikeable behavior all over the place like Roy having sex with another woman immediately after getting out of jail and Celestial simply stopping her letters with no explanation and no divorce. The last couple of chapters - the behavior became worse and worse. Ack. And all the explanations provided by the characters themselves seemed like the author was just having characters say the same things in different ways again and again. How many times did I have to hear Roy claim he's non-violent? Or Celestial claim she didn't want to be married or owned. By the middle of the book, I wanted it to end.

I will say that the epilogue was oddly satisfying but I didn't think all the suffering to get there was worth it. ( )

This author has been recommended to me since Silver Sparrow was published years ago. I loved this story on so many levels, and from the first chapter I was hooked on the character's "voices." They are clever, funny, heartfelt, wise, and honest, giving me a glimpse into a world I know nothing of: what it is like to be black. You can't help but cheer for Roy throughout the story, even when he's made wrong decisions (a bit of a playboy) you know that this is a man who feels things deep down, who wants more out of life than his parents ever garnered, a man who is honest and clawing his way to put his life back together after being in prison for a crime he didn't commit.
While the story is mainly told from Celestial and Roy's POV's (a few chapters from Andre) I feel this is really Roy's story.
And it's one that I highly recommend to all. ( )
