Such a fun story. Loved all the talk about microbes. ( )

Interesting! Between sourdough itself (and a severely weird starter), the setting in Alameda (my home town), and Sloan's usual slightly sideways look at the world (see: weird starter), it was definitely worth reading, and I'm likely to read it again in the not-too-distant future. Being a baker, and an occasional computer programmer, I clicked with a lot of the situations. I like Lois and watching her develop beyond what's expected of her. The robot arm is fascinating, and I love her solution. There was one slightly odd aspect to the writing; Lois had no dialog - which I didn't even notice until more than halfway through. What she says is there, but it's presented as narration (no quotes) - which kind of makes sense since we see the whole book through her eyes, but...odd. Worth reading and likely rereading. ( )

A quirky, witty book about a young woman who combines robotics programming and sourdough bread baking to create spectacular results. Even the dust jacket is more than it seems. ( )

This book was billed to me as quirky, but I found it a little strange. I really am honestly struggling to think of why I had a hard time connecting with this book, but the truth is, I just never warmed to it. ( )

3.5 Sloan does for food in Sourdough what he did for books in Penumbra. Lois Clary is a talented computer/robot programmer who gets recruited by a big deal San Francisco company and leaves behind her stable, predictable Ohio life to branch out. SF is grueling -- in the work hours and tiny apartment and city anonymity and Lois is pretty unhappy, tired and underfed, consuming "Slurry" a nutritional liquid that meets all her dietary needs except substance and taste. She orders from a take-out flyer and her life is transformed. She meets brothers Beorig and Chimon who operate a carryout business that only offers spicy soup and sourdough bread and her life is transformed. When they leave town due to immigration issues, they leave her their sourdough starter and a whole new chapter of life begins. She starts to work with her hands instead of her mind. She meets more people, she becomes part of an experimental, "secret" literally underground farmer's market and she ultimately leaves her computer job to bake. Fairy tale-ish in some of the magical properties of the bread (think Strega Nona) and the brothers' native culture (think gypsy)-apologies if in my listening I'm overlooking a legit culture) and an interesting fusion of food and technology -- GMOs, robotics (Lois programs an arm to assist in her baking). Also tackled are the non-quantifiable ingredients like love, passion, tradition, but most of all the need to feed not only body, but soul with meaningful work and relationships. Fun and appetizing. It would have been nutritive gel for dinner, same as always, if I had not discovered stuck to my apartment's front door a paper menu advertising the newly expanded delivery service of a neighborhood restaurant.
