A middle-grade novel for fans of boarding school stories-with a dash of The Mysterious Benedict Society and a splash of Circus Mirandus! Sebastian Konstantinov comes from a long line of talented circus performers. Somehow, however, he has not inherited any of their acrobatic skill- he has no balance, he's afraid of heights, he can't even turn a somersault. But there's one thing he does know- his father's circus, which travels through Eastern Europe, is out of date and is fast running out of money. Seb has a solution, though- if he can somehow get into the Bonaventure Circus School in Montreal, Canada, he might be able to learn something valuable to help his father. Seb secretly writes to the Directrice (an old friend of his father's) and is accepted into the school. All he has to do is convince his father to send him away - oh, and keep his lack of talent a secret from all his teachers and classmates. Fortunately for him, he befriends two other students, who also don't seem to quite fit in. Seb is not the only one with secrets, it turns out. The school is literally crumbling beneath the feet of its students, and the directrice may be counting on Seb's "talent" to save the day. Can he and his new friends figure out what's really going on in the school that bills itself as the World's Best Circus School? SEE LESS… (mere)

This was a fun and exiting story about a boy who has no talent for the family business,"running away" from one circus to join another. It is a story featuring a great cast of characters and friendships, that I would recommend to anyone of all ages, mot just the middle grade audience it's written for.

Happy reading!

Delaney is one of my favorite writers. Each character in The Bonaventure Adventures has such a distinct voice, and they're all hilarious. The combination of humor and action in these pages will appeal to anyone's inner 12-year-old. I'm about ready to run away and join the circus. Or at least a circus school... ( )

The Bonaventure Adventures is a sweet book about finding your niche in the world, and standing up for yourself and your loved ones. As the black sheep (or bêtes noires) of the circus school in which they find themselves, Seb and his friends create their own path to success, helping each other along the way. Delaney has created a set of bold and realistic child characters in an unconventional setting, with a story that’s touched by the magic and wonder of the circus.

This book took me a while to get through because it was ultimately very boring and predictable. Main character is a kid who wants to save his family's business despite not having the sort of talent everyone believes is necessary to contribute, and it becomes painfully obvious how the story is going to play out very early on. There's also the meh writing, which was a roadblock for me deriving much enjoyment from the book. The story would have been much more enjoyable as an animated kid's tv show or film, I think. ( )

Seb (short for Sebastian) grew up in the circus world; however, the circus is losing money and Seb feels he needs to find a way to save it. His father is the ring master of the circus and Seb's friends are all the circus members. In searching through his father's things, he find some letters from a circus school in Montreal. They have offered him a full scholarship because he is connected with this great circus. However, Seb has no circus skills. He still gets into the school because of his name but soon discovers that the school and his circus have secrets. He makes friends, discovers he might have some circus skills (storytelling), and helps to secure a huge financial donation for the school. I hope there will be a sequel as there are several unanswered questions and more to be explored in this circus school and world. I found this book really enjoyable. I would definitely recommend to kids looking for adventure books or books about finding your place in the world. ( )
