Spider-Girl: Vol. 2 – Like Father, Like Daughter collects issues #6-11 of Spider-Girl written by Tom DeFalco and illustrated by Pat Olliffe. Continuing the adventures of May “Mayday” Parker, the daughter of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson-Parker, this volume introduces several other new characters including Ladyhawk, a new Nova, Killer Watt, and more. Mr. Negative and Crazy Eight return, seeking to get rid of Peter Parker, whose career in the police threatens their criminal enterprises. In a fun twist, Mayday travels back in time and meets Spider-Man during his youth, helping him to battle the original Spider-Slayer during the vents of Amazing Spider-Man #25. This neatly follows her parents’ tentative acceptance of Mayday’s burgeoning career as Spider-Girl. The story continues to develop May’s friends and fellow classmates, Moose, Brad, Davida, and Courtney. In a way, these MC2 stories foreshadow the storytelling that the Ultimate line of comics later did, though these are inextricably linked to the mainstream Marvel Universe circa 1999. This volume comes in a digest-sized edition as Marvel was releasing some of its titles in that format in the mid-2000s. ( )

It goes in directions it should have probably waited to go, but DeFalco can hardly be blamed considering the unease of Spider-Girl's future at the time, and he still managed to pull off an entertaining story. ( )
