Quick & Dirty: This is a dark comic about one woman’s obsession with vampires. Too bad they are not the warm and cuddly kind.
Opening Sentence: “This is completely unacceptable.”
The Review:
I am uncool. There. I have admitted it out loud. I had no idea what 30 Days of Night was until I was asked to read this comic book. And what it is in a word: CREEPY.
This new version of the classic 30 Days follows a young lady by the name of Alice Blood. She is looking for evidence of vampires through her website, Desperately Seeking Vampire. While on a tip, she gets what she asked for. Now what? In the meantime, it seems that a civil war is brewing within the ranks of the undead. The Elders and their traditional views of hiding versus the new vampires and their god-complexes. Any bets on who will win that one? Either way, humans look to be (if you can forgive the pun) the sheep in a room full of hungry wolves. Is there a way to avoid bloodshed before the whole thing turns into a war of epic proportions?
The whole issue is a tease. A little taste of this world’s psycho vampires and their motivations. A little look into the type of woman apparently obsessed with finding a real vampire. A little hint of previous stories involving the infamous Barrow, Alaska. Lots of references to events that I know nothing about but enough information to let me follow along.
The artwork is impressive. It’s gritty and dark, without it coming out comical. The eyes on the vampires are a nice touch. It makes it easier to identify the bad guys. But I will say that the teeth kind of freak me out. Maybe that’s the point? Seriously, the artwork is what makes the whole thing for me. It gives it a much more horror feel than with just words alone could accomplish.
Overall, it got my attention. At least, just enough for me to want to know what happens next. I reserve the right to not read the other 30 Days of Night released until this one ends. Though I may have to watch the movie in the meantime. The only downside I found was the size (27 pages without the extras at the end) – it is a comic book after all.
